I loved Lettermen, but it could get uncomfortable sometimes. Certain guests, you could just see the distain in Dave's face, and he hated the interview. It made moments like these even better.

Conan once said that every single Norm appearance on his show was unscripted. They'd try to prepare him every time and he'd just go off on his own and bring down the house, so eventually they stopped even trying. He also said (paraphrasing): "If you want to watch me genuinely laugh, watch Norm's appearances on my show. If you study my face, you'll see that I never knew what was coming next."

Norm thoroughly understood Letterman's influence on Comedy from the early 80s to 90s (when Letterman was at his peak). You could watch Carson making lame jokes, or Letterman throwing watermelons off of building. Every talk show afterward is copying Letterman. His comedy penetrated all media and can be felt to this day

i love Norm's Comedy for how "innocent" it was and still funny. He didn't have to make things obscene and dirty, he could keep it classy and clean, but still funny. That was his great gift i believe, although to be fair, sometimes he also got dirty.
