A bird's hydration status can be evaluated by identifying the ulnar vein, also known as the basilic or wing vein, which may be found by using a moistened cotton ball to part the feathers over the ventral elbow. The vessel may be blanched using digital pressure; it should have almost instant refill (should not be able to visualize the refill because it is so fast) in a normally hydrated bird.
