the subtalar joint is inverted approximately 2 to 3 degrees at the time of heel contact. immediately after heel contact, rapid eversion of the calcaneus begins and continues until mid-stance( 30%-35% of GC), where a maximally everted position of approximately 2 degrees is reached. At that time, the subtalar joint reverses its direction of movement and starts toward inversion. Normally, a relatively neutral position of the calcaneus is reached at about 40% to 45% of the gait cycle, which corresponds to approximately heel off. Between heel off and toe-off, calcaneal inversion continues until it reaches a value of approximately 6 degrees of inversion.During swing, the calcaneus returns to a slightly inverted position in preparation for the next heel contact. This pattern of motion is generally agreed on in the literature; however, the reported amount of foot pronation during gait varies based on the techniques and preferences for measurement. Reischl and co-workers,176 using a three-dimensional model of the foot, report a mean peak pronation of 10.5 ± 3.4 degrees, occurring at 26.8% ± 8.7% of the gait cycle. The movement of foot pronation or supination during walking is accompanied by changes in the height of the foot’s medial longitudinal arch. individuals with “flat-arched” feet (pes planus) typically demonstrate a greater amount of rearfoot pronation when walking.
