Hey I’ve got a ‘78 Musicmaster bass. Bought it off some girl in Pennsylvania back in the 80s when it was just old, not vintage. It was pale yellow back then, not so pale now. No clue what I paid. Not much though. Drilled a hole in the lower horn for a second strap button when my left handed sister played it in high school. The tuners have some shaky spots. It’s got its own sound. I like it. My brother’s got an old Univox Hi Flier bass. That thing is fantastic. Killer. I found it for him in a pawnshop in the early 90s when they were comically cheap. Should have found one for myself. If one of those ever wanders into the store that’s a thumpin Thursday bass.

I have a 1973 MusicMaster bass that I bought new! It’s still in perfect condition except for a little chrome peeling on the bridge. I even still have the original receipt. Cost me, in the UK, £80. It’s a great instrument, the neck is just perfect, especially for a guitarist who occasionally plays bass, like me.

Marc, I really enjoy the fact that you are such a Keef fan that even when you play a bass you defer to a Richards written bassline. I laughed hard. Bill Wyman was too busy chasing younger women to care about the studio anyway. Those basses are fun, great little players. I bought a black one in 1979 with a case for $177.00 out the door @ Chuck's in DC and I wish I had never parted with it. I bought it as a backup instrument since I only had one bass at the time and my band was going to work on a cruise ship for the season. While on that gig I sold it to a guy in another band aboard ship who was from the Philippines. He was playing a really God-awful dog of a P Bass copy that he said he'd paid $600 for. He was thrilled with his "Real Fender Bass" I sold him for $400. I figured after the cruise I'd just pick up another one, but there were none to be found. The ship was berthed in Manhattan so before going home I tried Manny's & Sam Ash; later at home I tried Chuck Levin's again but they were all gone. I learned a valuable lesson about basses ... don't ever sell 'em, just buy 'em! ....funny side note: after Romeo bought that bass, during the next week each of the other 7 members of his band discreetly pulled me aside and offered me $400 for my Rickenbacker 4001S.

I think so but I would love to haggle.

This goes out to all of you. Jeff Beck a great guitarist. Jeff Beck with drummer Vinnie Colaiuta & bassist Tal Wilkenfeld. Turns Jeff Beck's boring playing into incredible sounding musicianship. Jeff Beck has known this since he's went solo the importance of a great bassist and drummer makes him look and sound very very good. Watching live with both the drummer in the bassist I have mentioned and then listen to his greatest album blow-by-blow..., what made that album great was the bassist and the drummer.

rotom223 - Cool. My brother and I went to the "Back to the Fifties" car show in Minneapolis about 4 years back and had an absolute blast all the way around. Good stuff. It would be so cool to go to one of the street parties taking place while the Jets are in the playoffs - they're having to close entire blocks around the arena - great atmosphere, apparently.

love my 78 musicmaster bass. bought it new in 1980 for $89 on closeout, full retail price in those days was $140(a brand new usa made basic stratocaster was $600 back then...) i've played a mustang bass and really, the sound is almost the same between both instruments. the mustang bass does have a better bridge, so you can set it up for better intonation. but the pickups on both instruments don't sound very different. my guess is the surplus strat pickup in the musicmaster has a better magnet and more copper wire than the mini split pickup on the mustang so it produces more output, but the split design of the mustang is supposed to be more resistant to electrical noise and hum. never had any noise problems in any case.

Hello Mark! And Jen! And whoever else reads these comments! My name is Brittany and I’m commenting in hopes of catching you and Jen’s attention for a birthday shout out. My boyfriend is a die hard Guitar of the Day fan and over the past year, I’ve even gotten into it even though I’m not even a musician. Our nightly routine is chilling on the couch and watching Guitar of the Day together. He is huge fan and ever since I’ve started watching, I’ve made a mental note to make sure he gets a birthday shout out. Then the week before his birthday, everyone decides shout outs are no more! I was so upset because I had planned on contacting and now I’m begging y’all to please give a special shout out (even though shout outs are cancelled) for my boyfriend Jessie Vasser. He’s a huge Fender nerd and I would love if you would play the JagStang you guys have in (if you haven’t sold it already) for him. Or just the shout out, beggars can’t be choosers! I’ll take what I can get. It would mean a lot to him for his 35th birthday this Saturday, April the 28th. Plus you would earn me a million girlfriend points! Fingers crossed my plea is heard!

The Musicmaster Bass originally had very different looking tuners on them which turned off most younger players at the time (I was one). Everybody wanted a Fender Bass with the iconic looking headstock and with those batwing looking things it just wasn't happening. Which explains why they didn't sell very well until this revision was made. Rabbit Trail Question: Do you have any of the various incarnations of the Telecaster Bass on your shelves? It would be interesting to see some of them side by side on some future Thumpin Thursday. The only big change made is that the pickup was changed and then relocated twice. They went: Single Coil in the middle (just like the Musicmaster Bass) to HB at the Neck then late they moved the HB to the Bridge. Neither HumBucking version really sounded very good but oddly the Modern Player Version which had 2 HBs sounds really great, I found one on Reverb.com last year.
