NC native here. Glad you got to visit our state! The audio tour of Biltmore with the headphones is much better than the tour guides. My favorite parts to see when I go are the laundry, mending area, the kitchens, and the Halloween room and pool. The grounds are gorgeous and the hiking and biking trails are wonderful. I will say there are adjacent free trails that are just as good and once you have seen the house once it is definitely enough. There are so many great things in Asheville and Boone that you probably would have enjoyed more. There is a ghost tour through downtown, a folk art museum over on the parkway, and lots of independent bookstores and thrift stores. I hope one day you can come back, and see more of the state. Edited to add if pottery is what you like you need to come to Seagrove. The potters in Seagrove are known worldwide. They have classes and festivals.

I actually just got back from TN/NC yesterday. I travel to the Smokey Mountains 2-3 times a year. I find Biltmore beautiful. I have read a lot of information on the George and Edith Vanderbilt. I appreciate that you did some research on the family on your own and shared it. :-) I think that the biggest call out about George is what he did for NC and the Smokey Mountains. The mountains had been devastated/depleted by the lumbering industry. George came in and bought a ton of property. He hired some of the most well known/top of the line conservators for the property and the area that helped save the landscape and forestry. Like you said George did not make this money. I know his daughter was quite upset with the wealth and left the country, to never come back. He met a very early end. They mainly only used this as a home part time. IT was never truly finished inside. They did have an outdoor pool, I remembered vividly from when I went the first time, but came back to find it gone, I always thought that odd. It just sucks that it had to rain like that. I just really love how you totally immerse yourself in these places. :-) Thank you for sharing.

Enjoyed seeing all the sights in North Carolina that you filmed. Wow $100 to tour a rich persons house, and they are supposed to be philanthropists? Seems to me it should be free, a part of American history. Maybe the family doesn't want to pay for the upkeep of the place? So us little worker bees have to pay for it at exorbitant prices. I loved seeing the Antique and Collectible stores and all the scenery of North Carolina that you were able to share. I am so happy for you that you are not in such an anxious state anymore. It is great that you share that you had that issue but have been able to overcome much of the anxiety. It is an example for people who are anxious at this point in time in their life. You are an example of how it can be overcome. Thanks for your video I loved watching it.

LOL my thought exactly. And thank you! It took so much to get better anxiety wise but it is amazing how much bigger and brighter my world has gotten from tackling such a hard thing.

It's amazing how small of a world it is! That Gay's true value was from the largest town near where I grew up in NE PA! They have been a family owned hardware store for over 110 years! Loved all the pretty views in this video!

Thanks for sharing your journey, bummer about any uncooperative weather. I live in the Atlanta area and have been up to the Biltmore several times, have hiked Grandfather Mountain, visited Asheville many times. Lots of cool historic B&B's in that area. I love the Smokies and visit whenever I can. For a good read on the Vanderbilts, I highly recommend Anderson Cooper's book about his family titled "Vanderbilt."

Lovely vlog ❤ The vanderbilt house was a palace... Beautiful, but I totally understand your low mood. Forgetting to eat properly is so relatable to me. Paying 100 dollars (!!!!) and then having such rainy weather to visit the gardens, I would be disappointed too. That's a lot of money when you can't really enjoy it fully outside. Love the mountain drive footage, here in the Netherlands it's all very flat. Especially where I live there is mostly cities and flat farmland. Your video inspires me to go visit the alpes or something more woodlike in europe. I hope I get to travel to the US one day and do a roadtrip through all these beautiful places.

Yeah I'm usually better about eating while traveling but the food I had there was so bad and expensive I didn't want to spend more and as a result I got cranky lol. Yes you should definitely go somewhere less flat for a visit, I grew up close to the Rocky Mountains so I take being around mountains for granted.

I love Grandaddy's, it's right around the corner from my house! Great perspective on the Biltmore, I thought the recorded tour was rather lame, too. One thing that struck me is how the heck did they get all the supplies up the mountain? I believe the first train in Asheville was built in 1880, but they still had to haul everything up the mountain from there. Oh, and I did that grandfather mountain bridge for a school trip when the kids were in elementary school. It was in February or March, raining and cold and scary. Good for you! BTW: I really enjoy your travel vlogs and your perspective.

OMG you're right about getting that up the mountain, the tour would be much more interesting if they talked about that and got into more details on the labour and process required to build the place.

Did their greenhouse smell fragrant? I love traveling vicariously. It's a lot safer and I don't like crowds. I prefer to breathe, decompressing😊. I guess my idea of traveling nowadays is taking care of errands. Maybe I might visit the Seattle Waterfront someday 😊.

Also, I do hope you get to make it back that way again and visit the Smoky Mountains. They are one of the only free National Parks. There is a fee if you part for more than 15 minutes which is a whole dollar per day. Or $5 for a week or $25 annually. It is just so wonderful to wonder for miles and miles and miles at no real charge is wonderful. I have huge anxiety and appreciate you speaking to it at the end of your video. Good for you. :-)

Used to live in Brevard! Did a field trip to estate in early '70s. Only one floor was open with only a few rooms to visit. I think it was $10 per bus at the time. Most of the tour was outside. Blue ridge parkway : The Vanderbilts owned a LOT MORE land while they were still living at the estate but became a park later on, therefore parkway. Lincove viaduct? Last part built of parkway. Not a bridge but not an in ground road either. Truck drivers using a lane and a half to drive : typical! Did you honk your horn inside any tunnel? Yes, you can get car sick easy if you are not driving! Why didn't you fly into to Asheville rather than Raleigh? Lots of memories! Thanks!
@HaleyMarieVintage

I don't think I went through any tunnels lol, and since I live in Seattle it was significantly cheaper to fly into Raleigh instead of Ashville

I visited Asheville and the Biltmore last year for my birthday. The house was stunning, but I also enjoyed the garden and lower levels more than everything else. Did you get as far as the meadow/zen garden/dam area? We found a secret path through a bamboo forest down to the river with an old dock. It’s a pretty special place.

I totally relate to the overtired distress over tourism while travelling. I had an adult tantrum at my friend via text at the giants causeway in northern ireland because "the rocks aren't even impressive" 😂... They are, it's cool. I was just very hungry and tired and had been driving all day and had forgotten that northern Ireland was a different currency and couldnt find a public washroom for most of the day and and and... Worst trip ever at least until i had a snack and a nap

Fun to see. I can't seem to bring myself to travel anywhere in the south these days because of my distaste for the current state of southern politics, (even though I'm sure there are plenty of good people there, especially in the more urban areas). But I loved seeing the antique shops and the fancy houses.
@HaleyMarieVintage

I'd challenge you a little on this, this is a common thing I hear from a lot of people. There is so much specifically Black culture and business to support and experience in the south and while of course some of your money traveling there does go to these bad political structure if you spend your money intentionally you can bring income to marginalized communities. From my experience living in Washington the second you go out of cities you're spending your money in primarily red areas and I don't really see the South as being any different than that, they're just so gerrymandered and have laws around voting that make them more red than the people who live are. Not passing any judgments just something to think about!

@@HaleyMarieVintage Well, those are good points, and you're probably right. I just get the yucks thinking about going down there, and with limited travel funds would rather go someplace I'm excited to visit. But it's probably my loss because I would never see some of these cool places.
