When lockdown restricted our travel around the world (and made booking a Europe city break impossible), so decided to do a road trip of the NC500, and it was amazing!
Unreal scenery was everywhere, with the mountains and cliffs around Skye, the crazy 1-track road Baelach Na Ba winding through the mountains, unreal beaches across the north coast that look more Mediterranean than Scottish, and the seascapes of the Orkneys. It very much reminded us of New Zealand.
The enjoyment came more from driving around and just enjoying the scenery rather than there being loads of activities to do. We did take a whale watching boat trip from Ullapool, though despite boasting a 96% success rate, we didn't see any whales or dolphins! However we did see several dolphins from the ferry over to the Orkneys and again at Chanonry Point on the Black Isle (near Inverness). We also stopped quite frequently whenever we came across something interesting, like Smoo Cave on the North coast, Corrieshalloch Gorge near Ullapool, or Dunrobin Castle just outside of Golspie.
The weather generally really held up well for us (we went for 10 days in August). Just need to watch out for the midgies on the West coast!
