I recently conducted a poll on our KZitem channel to determine the next fishing location, and the "North Fork on the White" emerged as the top choice, thanks to our fantastic followers. A huge shoutout to everyone who made this episode possible!
My son and I embarked on a journey to the North Fork on a chilly December day, driving 3.5 hours to reach our access point. Our route took us through highway 412, a detour via the 202 outside Yellville, Arkansas, and a stop at Flys and Guides on Bull Shoals-a superb fly shop.

Crossing into Missouri, we followed highway 160 and navigated county roads PP and H to reach the Patrick Bridge access on the North Fork of the White River. This Missouri trout stream is a hidden gem, bustling with kayaks and canoes in warmer months. In winter, the low water allows for easy wading, but watch out for deep pockets.

Although I haven't explored this river extensively, I recommend carrying dry flies like caddis imitations, stone flies, and mayflies. For nymph fishing, opt for black or golden stone flies. Consider a dropper setup with a large black or golden stone dry fly (sz10 to sz12) and a black stone nymph (sz16).
Streamer fishing you can bet on natural-colored woolly buggers and various multicolor patterns. My son had success with a bright red and orange leech pattern. While I haven't tested big streamers yet, they're on my to-do list.
The North Fork is rich in aquatic insects, so pay attention to active hatches and investigate what the fish might be feeding on by flipping a few rocks. This unique river, the only one in Missouri with both Blue Ribbon and Red Ribbon areas, boasts Brown and Rainbow Trout, thanks to the Missouri Department of Conservation.
The Red Ribbon area spans from Patrick Bridge to Norfork Lake, offering access points at Patrick Bridge and Blair Bridge. The Blue Ribbon area extends from Rainbow Springs to Patrick Bridge, with access points like Kelly Ford down to Blair Bridge (be cautious of private land thru out the blue ribbon area).
Exploring this freestone river with my son was a memorable experience, filled with fish-catching adventures and appreciation for the beauty that will forever be etched in our minds.
