Before 1945 Korea was a single country, but after World War II, the United States and the Soviet Union agreed to divide the territory in two; the Soviet Union would control the northern part and the United States the southern part. This fact would influence the destiny of both countries; a socialist state would be installed in North Korea and a capitalist state in South Korea. In 1955 both countries had a similar GDP per capita. At the height of the Cold War, North Korea had the ideological and economic support of the Soviet Union and thus established its economy based on heavy industry such as iron, steel, cement and machinery. However, from 1970 onwards, the North Korean economy and industry stagnated definitively, almost collapsing in the 1990s due to the disintegration of the Soviet Union and, consequently, the economic support to North Korea came to an end. Not to go too far, there is a wide difference between the GDP per capita of South Korea and North Korea. South Korea, the capitalist country, was 18 times richer in 2008 than North Korea, which remains a country that has been stagnant for 50 years, isolated and without civil and economic freedoms.
