I lived in South Korea for a little bit. One Saturday morning, I woke up to air raid sirens. I thought about it for a minute, and decided it would be best to just go back to sleep and be incinerated. When I woke up again I was so confused. Turns out it was some sort of war memorial event. I don’t see how turning the air raid sirens on for the veterans is helpful in any way shape or form.

I moved to Aomori last year. It's the prefecture right below Hokkaido. I got a ballistic missile alert in my phone as I was about to go to work and heard sirens (last fall). The alert told us to go inside. I was apart of CERF-P for the army national guard. That is the response force for a nuclear, biological, or chemical disaster/attack. The map you showed for the initial blast is interesting, but it neglected what happens after the fact. The wind will blow contaminated particulate matter, and you’ll get something that looks like a candle. Everything in that candle becomes contaminated. My specific job in CERF-P was decontamination. So I’d be sitting at the very edge of the contaminated territory, the rescue teams would go in with hazmat suits to get people, and bring them to us, where we decontaminate them to the best of our ability before sending them to medical for evaluation. Unfortunately, in a scenario like this, you cannot get real medical help for your injuries until you have been decontaminated, else you put everyone else at risk as well. But rest easy knowing there are several response forces around the US training on a regular basis for such a disaster, so ideally we can minimize the loss of life.

I live in Japan but in Tokyo, unfortunately this is kind of a normal thing for the guys in Hokkaido since that's usually where the missiles are sent, but they're not meant to hit, just scare people and land in the ocean. HOWEVER, it is still extremely scary because they come VERY close to the ground, so close that you can see them fly through the air with the naked eye. We still actually get phone notifications when a missile is fired over but I couldn't imagine having to deal with the very real possibility that they're flying over lower than some skyscrapers and there isn't a lot of room for error on the landings, and on a regular basis. Something is going to happen one day and NK is going to end up starting a war on accident.

Every time I get reminded that North Korea exists I wish kim and all of his family gets deleted, government overthrown, and they reconnect with the brothers down south. I often wonder wouldn't it be better to nuke them pre-emptively just to be sure, but not only is that a bit of a genocide, massive pollution, playing with fire, and whatnot, but it could just end the world... It's also sucks how nobody wants to attack them because even though I don't think it'd be the biggest issue with South Korea's proper military, the US military, probably Japanese military too, but it would either be ultra quick blitzkrieg, or they launch their nukes everywhere and nobody wants that...
@point-five-oh6249

@Jao Bai Dun Missiles only travel about 500 miles per hour (805ish km/hour) which is about the speed of a commercial airplane. It stands to reason if you're looking especially hard and you know where they come from that you could probably see it just the same as you can see meteors coming into Earth's atmosphere before crashing down, some of which travel a lot faster. Also you can't really link videos in YT comments, so you'll have to do your own research.

The prisoner's dilemma tells me that MAD might not be as realistic as we think. One of the reasons I don't worry too much about the Norks is that Japan doesn't seem to worry too much about them, and they're neighbours with a long hatred of each other, and I always figured Kim would nuke them first, if only because they're harder to miss. This might be changing

There is one thing that's missing from nukemap, and that is the shrapnel effect... Imagine a buckshot, now multiply it with the radius within the shockwave, now point it outwards. Glass, concrete, rebar etc etc, impacting zones outside of the end of the explosion. Imagine minding your own business and hear the news of the detonation in a city miles away from, suddenly you hear a slight drizzle, building up to a cascade of debris, raining down like hail, metal pieces the sizes cars, rebar actin like needles and showers of molten glass acting like razors. Scary...

It's not just because they want food - there is a massive underlying anger among the North Korean political class right now. Remember, Kim Jon Un was hamulated in front of his own party by the US when Trump's administration failed to proceed with negotiations. More specifically, Kim Jon Un lost face in front of the "Presidium of the Politburo of the Workers' Party of Korea" (WPK). These are the people that Rocket Man must keep happy. Kim lost face and the Politburo was enraged because they lost face. Expect more weapon's tests and provocative acts. They has been pissed at the United States ever since they resumed their military exercises in 2019 after the failed diplomacy of Donald Trump - sabotaged by Mike Pompeo in 2018. These exercises are conducted with South Korea where they simulate a bombing run that consists of flying B-52Hs loaded with warheads towards the DMZ escorted with fighter aircraft and pull up at the last minute to conclude the simulated bombing run. The North Koreans are pushing their luck, but it is very clear why they are angry, and why they are demonstrating the reach of their missiles. I believe we can expect a new type of military exercise conducted with missile defenses soon. Please note: North of the DMZ, the North Koreans have dug tunnels, bunkers and fortified positions in the side of the mountains with artillery positions that can blacken the sky above Seol with shells. A war with North Korea will destroy the capital city of South Korea and will become a drawn out quagmire. The US would have to saturate that country with Nukes. This would trigger a response from North Korea's Allies. I can almost guarantee NK is doing this possibly with the blessing of China and Russia. the tests come at an interesting time with South Korea is planning to send 500k artillery shells to the US for them to donate to Ukraine. Diplomacy is needed right now; Hint-Hint, consider ceasing those simulated bombing runs at the DMZ border towards Pyongyang. BTW: Yes NK has ICBMs that can hit Hawaii and the West Coast of the United States now.

For those who don't know what to do in a ICBM impact: Stay put in the strongest part of the structure you're in OR put a hil between you and the blast. DO NOT ATTTEMPT TO DRIVE AWAY UNTIL AFTER THE SHOCKWAVE. Wait until after the pressure wave whilst putting on layers of clothes, or otherwise covering your skin. This will give you an edge if there's radiation involved. After emerging from the rubble, assemble anybody in your immediate area and make your way to your vehicle. The reason why driving away is the final step is because the roads will be clogged with trashed cars and trucks ifeveryone decides to drive away before the blastwave. If your local authorities prefer that you hold out, do that. Emergancy vehicles can't move around very easily if the roads are clogged with trashed vehicles. That is all.
@forgotultag1543

I know very little so please don't laugh for me asking: will the shockwave also generate an EMP wave that will disable/fry electronics across ocean-wide distances? I remember MW2 (game) did that as a localized EMP, so just wondering if radios and cars in other countries will be affected.
