I had the good fortune to capture this time lapse of the aurora borealis, or northern lights, from around 11:30 p.m. on July 3 to around 1:30 a.m. on July 4. I filmed in Farmington, New Hampshire, which is pretty far south and usually doesn't get the opportunity to see the lights. The camera was pointed north towards Mount Washington. The night was quite clear too. This was the first time I've ever seen the aurora in person. The northern lights are caused by a CME or coronal mass ejection from the sun. Apparently the effects of one that occurred on July 1 narrowly missed Earth, but are making for some pretty impressive light shows none the less. Who needs fireworks for the 4th of July when you can watch this all night?
