Not survivable. Not even in Cold War battlefield of Central Europe. Which is the war that USAF had to be prepared to fight. Canada adopted F-5E (CF-5E), and RCAF acknowledged that it was ineffective and not-survivable in high intensity warfare in Europe with Warsaw Pact.

That is a pretty rapid roll out despite the cool reception. Too often the powers that be compete for resources instead of combing talent toward mutually beneficial ends. Great docuhistory.

It's a shame that politics (and possibly graft) got in the way and prevented this gorgeous aircraft from going into widespread service with the USAF. The F-5 is an almost perfect design for its job.

If that thing had had a shorter nose, it would have been interesting for the Navy as well. Prior to Crusader/Phantom, jets built to operate from carriers tended to be rather small. As for the F-5 Freedom Fighter, I strongly suspect the fabled gun built into the A-10 Warthog (GAU-7) to be both heavier *and* longer than the entire airplane.

39:27 That T-38 turning and burning after that BUF, . Water injection thrust augmentation max takeoff thrust on those turbojet engines. Today's turbofan engines are quite a bit cleaner and produce more thrust using less fuel. With even newer Rolls Royce engines upcoming.

In the vertical fight, the Crusader won. In the turning fight, the F-5/T-38. I say T-38 because Top Gun initially used T-38s as MiG-21 simulators.

The X-29 has the fusealge of the F-20 and NOT the F-5.....F-5 is twin engine....whereas BOTH the F-20 and X-29 are single engine.
@k.h.1587

Technically the f20 has the fuselage of the f5. A single engine just changed the rear slightly. And the x29 was made from an F5, not built from scratch and definitely not from one of the 3 f20s built, 2 crashed and the other is in a museum. The x29 was literally built with the fuselage of an f5

@@damien5748 no you are not. Simply having a single engine does not make it the same design. In your world you may be right, but in the world of aviation you are not. Simply read about the x29 and you will find it used an f5 fuselage. And again, SO did the f20. The f20 is an F5G, it was not a whole new design, just an update. The F20 designation was marketing, it is in the F5/t38 family.
