I contemplated a purchase and since I was not far from their location asked if I could go by and pick out a gun as opposed to having one shipped to me they never returned my request. I purchased a Kibler instead. Paid more for the gun but got what I paid for.

What I have been told, a good lock is when both springs have the right tension and when you shoot there is little to no hesitation between the pan fire and the touch hole ignition. You have her timed just right. And the India Muskets are proving themselves. As for what you had to do, things worked out great. But really, I have heard of expensive brands having problems , so, it's not just the India guns. If India used better wood, they could possibly charge more. Yeah, we have to drill the touch hole, but that's no big deal. Great video.

Indeed, they made the trade muskets until the very late 1800's at least, switching from flint to percussion ignition in the 1870's-1880's. From the 1860's to the end of the trade muskets manufacture they were widely distributed amongst primitive tribes in Africa and Southeast Asia. While still distributed in the Americas at that time, the trade in Africa and SE Asia kept them in production. They had a fantastically long run, and an extremely interesting history. I doubt there is an animal on earth that hasn't been taken with one.

I have a kit I built of a 24 guage with 30" barrel. The brass serpent broke into 2 pieces and the black walnut stock wrist broke off when I dropped it a while back. Made repairs and hung it on the wall. Broken stock wrists are easy to repair if they split along the wood grain, which mine did, but it really pissed me off. Mine shoots .570 balls unpatched. Only good for running Buff at point blank range from horseback.

@@INeverMetAGunIDidntLike I used glue, 2 wood screws, and wrapped it with tanned deerskin. I thought about wet rawhide, but had the deerskin on hand. The serpent only shows a tiny crack when it is screwed in place, so I left it that way.

Yes you do have to drill the vent hole. The maker usually takes a punch and marks were to drill it but I wouldnt go by that, some times they mark it too low in the pan or too far back. I take a long rod and measure the inside length then mark it on the outside of the barrel, near the flash pan, so that I know if I need to go a little forward of their mark. I use a 5/64 bit. Some people say to use a 1/16th bit.

I’m looking at that exact one at the moment. I have heard horror stories about them and looking to go from cap and ball to flintlock. Would you say they are safe enough for a patched ball and 75 grains of powder for deer or black bear? I want one I can go after anything from squirrels to black bear.
@INeverMetAGunIDidntLike
2 жыл бұрын
70 grains is the most I have shot out of this one thus far. My 1795 from India has a thicker barrel and I have shot 120 grains out of it. I personally can't find any documented horror stories except one and it was due to operator error. The problem with these imports, you may have to do some fine tuning on them as I had to with mine. You also have to drill out the vent hole. Would I feel comfortable taking a deer with mine? I would out to 50 yards. I have never used a patched ball, I just load the old school way, powder, ball then wadding.

I know your video is more than a year old, but either patch the ball or put some wadding between the powder and the ball. If the ball is "loose" put some wadding in over the top of it -- even if it's wasp nest paper. As to putting something between the powder and the ball, I do that with my cannons -- it keeps the burning powder behind the ball instead of shoting out all around it as its pushed out the barrel. For better accuracy and longer range in a smoothbore, it's hard to beat a properly sized patched ball that sits firmly against the powder charge. I do the same thing on my Thompson Center, which has a rifled barrel and that is even more accurate. I haven't experimented yet with "minie ball" type rounds yet, but I'd bet they'd be Civil War accurate coming out of that Thompson flintlock.@@INeverMetAGunIDidntLike

@INeverMetAGunIDidntLike
Жыл бұрын
I haven't replaced it yet, you can look on Track Of The Wolf's web site and see what sizes they offer. I'm sure you will have to do some sanding on it in order for a proper fit. Sorry I can't be of any more help.
@yepiratesworkshop7997
10 ай бұрын
Go to Lowes and pick the closest oak dowel (as in slightly fatter and slightly longer) and then get the sandpaper out. That's if you want to make it fit in the rifle. I generally just leave the way too fragile 'originals' in their place and get a much thicker oak dowel (about 2 times as thick as the 'original' that leaves about 5 or 6 inches sticking out of the barrel to make loading, etc. easier. I sometimes make the ramming end from a piece of fired brass of about the right sise for a snug fit on the dowel. To get is that 'concave' profile, I put something in it (like the dowel) and then cinch that up in a vise and find the right sized ball peen hammer to place where I want the 'dimple' to be. Then, I hit that hammer with another, heavier hammer -- usually with a piece of leather between the faces so I'm not striking two hardened steel hammer faces together. I haven't screwed around with trying to make a brass or bronze screw-worm for these because it's something I've never really had to use on any of my flintlocks or my cannons. If anything, they're only to get any top wadding out so you can get the ball to roll out anyway. Then, I guess you'd use it to get the wadding out that's holding the powder charge and just dump the powder. I've always just shot them out. Much easier.
