Appointed by Tilbury Douglas under the NHS ProCure22 Framework, Armac completed the demolition of Norton Court, situated on the Queen Elizabeth Hospital site in Birmingham. This project is part of the ongoing regeneration work being undertaken by the NHS Trust, with whom we have an established relationship following our excellent results on the Birmingham Children’s Hospital MSCP, and the former Birmingham Dental Hospital. Norton Court has accommodated a wide variety of hospital services for many years. Sadly, given its age, it was becoming increasingly difficult to provide the same high-quality environment for patients, staff and visitors that is enjoyed in other parts of the hospital. As part of the Big Build development programme, the building was demolished ready for construction of a new state-of-the-art hospital in 2023.
Norton Court QE Hospital’s location played a pivotal role in the planning, and operation, of its demolition. The main body of the demolition was located metres away from Birmingham Women’s Hospital, which remained fully operational throughout our time on site. Extensive noise, dust, and vibration control was also especially important due to the 2.5 metres of space between the site and its adjacent neo-natal unit, leaving no room for error.
