His name had long been on the list of potential Nobel laureates. This Thursday, the Swedish Academy named Norwegian playwright and author Jon Fosse the winner of the 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature. Born in 1959 on Norway's western coast, the 64-year-old's vast body of work includes plays, novels, poetry, essays, children's books and translations. The committee praised Fosse's "innovative plays and prose which give voice to the unsayable", and his "ability to evoke man's loss of orientation." As FRANCE 24's Alison Sargent explains, his philosophical and minimalistic work often draws comparisons to Irish playwright - and fellow Nobel laureate - Samuel Beckett.
