After a bad day at work, a young man attempts to re-capture his childhood by sleeping on his elementary school's soccer field.
Nostalgic Freedom is a short film that 3 of my friends and I made back in 2019 while attending SDSU (San Diego State University). This was the 2nd film of my 1st production class. The objective was to make a short film that had no on screen dialogue and no subtitles. No characters were allowed to speak on camera but voiceovers were allowed. The restrictions were there to help us get creative and make something we may not normally make.
I came up with the concept for this film just minutes before a pitch was due. My team and I were going to make a completely different film that none of us were particularly confident in. But while trying to think of a better idea, I was inspired by a unique location that I had access to. I pitched to our professor the concept of a man who must sleep on his elementary school's soccer field in order to overcome anxiety and a the driver of an imaginary car that wants to run him over. The man tells this story to his therapist through the use of voiceovers. It worked and the idea was green lit. I based the story around what we could reasonably do at this location without any special effects.
While this wasn't the most cinematic or professional film that our class made that semester, it was well received. People particularly liked it for its strange story and the stunt driving. If the story doesn't make sense to you, don't worry. It explores the concepts of nostalgia and hallucinations with limited dialogue. I will admit that someone going to their old soccer field just to sleep on it, is kind of strange. Out of all the films I was involved in during my time at SDSU, this is the one that I had the most roles in. (Writing, directing, producing, editing, camera operating, voice acting and stunt driving). The pandemic caused a major shift in our productivity as film students, so I am eternally grateful that we got to make this film before the pandemic started.
PS: The stunt driving footage was not sped up or slowed down at all. The shot where I came close to hitting Daniel was, at first, deemed too dangerous to use in the film. After I stopped the car, Daniel and I burst out laughing because of how close I was to hitting him. But we had to re-do that shot again anyways because the camera did not record any audio. So we did a 2nd take with the same setup. This time, Daniel ran faster, so I could not get as close to him. But the camera did record the audio, so I used it to dub over the 1st take. The 1st take is what you see in the final film. So not all of the audio in this film is completely real, but the footage is!
