Hey Quest. I'm a long time subscriber on another profile. You were one of the first gaming channels I have ever seen when I found you. I have watched all of your videos and think you are in my top favorites of all KZitemrs ever. I will forever be a fan. Thanks for all the great memories you shared. Thanks for sharing your passion for gaming. Stay safe and game on!

Love when I am feeling a bit nostalgic about gaming.

Nice and well worn, yours be. Awesome, shows lots of love, long hours of contemplation, probably the occasional frustration. I think I did a video on mine, somewhere. I remember adding several expansion pacts, including one that ended up being a core part of the Fiend Folio. I think most of us can relate to life changes and how time seems to shift. Occasionally I lament that I don't have the time like I did with my younger self, to play, to create, to wallow in the hobby. That said, it was all those days; those hours spent doing everything you said, that makes us the gamers we are today. I wouldn't trade that time for anything...not even more time, to be honest. Although I keep telling myself that the day will come when I'm old(er) and retired(ish) and will find the time once again. It's a dream, anyway.

Nostalgia is a big reason I subscribed to you in the first place. I got started with ttrpgs as a 9 year old girl playing Rifts in the 90s with some slightly older kids, went down a Palladium Books rabbit hole, played White Wolf games and some indie ttrpgs before I finally got around to playing D&D. Seeing your videos covering Palladium stuff got me with some nostalgia hooks, and I've been subbed ever since!

I really enjoyed your story. I am the same way with the Fiend Folio. As far as running a game at a con, I say run what makes you happy. Your joy and enthusiasm for 2e will be easy to see and people will want to play. So run a short 2e adventure with pre gens and have fun playing the game you love.

I had a similar experience lately, with my old GURPS 3rd edition books, when everything was more simple, and also with my AD&D 2nd edition books, like there is still a campaign of Spelljammer in me. Nostalgia is good, it's not a pain, it's memory we lived in. And that can become the catalyst to create some more!

This is beautiful, man! Thanks for making this video and sharing your feelings. AD&D 2nd edition was the first RPG I ever played. The artwork of that era is a great inspiration to me as an artist.

You could do a very small quick dungeon crawl like 6 rooms. That way you could have short sessions that wouldn't take much time, but give players a taste of the game. If you wanted to expand a little more, you could do multiple 6 room dungeons each one being a different level of the dungeon. That way players who wanted more could get more, but casual players could do their level and move on with the convention. I would also color code them rather than number them, that way no one would know how deep they are, or that someone else was further down, ect. Maybe even set the scenario as you (players) were kidnapped and have to escape the dungeon. They have no idea how deep they are or how many levels they have to go through to escape.

It is always good to see a video form you. What if you did a traditional dungeon dive that way people and jump in at any time, they could be found in a room. After a few rooms if they need to go they can just move on. I just went to our local comic con and I could not see my self spending too much time to play a game. Too many other activities to do.

A while back you did a video creating a 2e character. It might have been called bringing back the old ways or something to that effect. I loved it. 2e will forever be my favorite version of DND. I'll watch anything you make for it.

Being accused of “simply nostalgia” feels disingenuous as, I’m not looking back… I’m enjoying it RIGHT NOW! When I look over book a, b or c from 45 years ago or 10 years ago, I still dig it….whether it’s D&D B/X, Tunnels & Trolls, a modern clone of something I never played back in the day (Spellzard!), or RISUS, or a MERP or Palladium supplement…all….Im loving all of them right NOW! And THAT is not simply, quaint ‘nostalgia’. No.

I was just re-watching your "Reviving the Old Ways" video from four years ago and wondering when Quest Wise would get back to AD&D again... that series was all too short. Since you asked, I'll give my experience and advice on this subject. I started with AD&D 2e back in the mid-1990's (playing First Quest with a high school friend, which quickly led to me joining a Forgotten Realms 2e group that lasted throughout my high school years). I went to college when D&D 3rd Edition first came out and I absolutely hated it... so much so that I effectively quit all gaming of any sort for the next fifteen years. Then, long after packing away my dice, I rediscovered all of my old minis, boardgames, card games, RPGs, old computer games and video games, which had been stashed at my mom's house. It was like a time capsule to the 90s. I'm not a gamer now... I am not into "the culture" or "the community." I would never call myself a "gamer" and I haven't bought a new game for a quarter of a century and have zero plans to spend even a penny on new games for the rest of my life. But I can say that I currently play the hell out of these old 90's games with my kids. The gaming space at my house is basically a shrine to 1990's games. It bugs me when KZitemrs tell us to go out and buy this or that... I've got a lifetime of games to play and models to paint, what more could I want? But my situation is my own, and everyone is different. You need to be realistic with your interests. 1990's TSR D&D is the only D&D I will ever play, but is that really true for you? Maybe your 2e years are in the rearview mirror... you have to think about what caused the Reviving the Old Ways series to stumble and lose momentum. I don't think there is any point in proselytizing these games to newcomers... I play these games with my kids because that is quality family time for us. We're making memories. But the things you may be missing might not even be the game itself, but the time you spent with those friends. If they've moved on (or moved away), and you don't have someone important to share it with, maybe the best you can hope for is enjoying reading these books and reminiscing. Then again, sitting back and thinking about running a game is never going to give you the satisfaction of really following through and running a game for real. But never play a game with someone that you wouldn't otherwise be spending your time with. Look at the people that you really enjoy hanging out with, even when you are doing nothing at all, and play with them.
