There are different things you can try its best if the sheep can be in a dry place until the foot heals. Kopertox can be applied to the hoof first then pack a mixture of sugar and betadine inside the toes and bottom of the hoof. Put cotton between the toes and bottom of hoof then bandage with a wrap then place masking tape on the bottom and around as and added way to keep the hoof dry. Copper sulfate powder in another treatment option but some say it irritates the hoof sometimes. Flystrike is dangerous as fly larvae release toxins which can put an animal into shock or even death. Always keep an eye on pets in the warmer months especially older ones.

Why dont you make permanent paddocks on either side with an alley way down the middle. Just have your animals cross the isle and they are on fresh pasture. Seems this fencing you use takes alot of time to move them. You can still rotate but so much easier.
@Chief667
14 күн бұрын
Then you have to maintain way more fence at a higher cost. He can use the same fence for unlimited acres. A permanent fence for their entire farm would be a big investment up front and then like I said you need to maintain the entire thing and check and fix it ahead of every move, otherwise you are just letting your animals out. Also they can use the portable fences anywhere, like right around the house or their pond where you would not want a permanent fence. And the electric fence keeps predators out as well as your animals in. A coyote will dig under a permanent fence but not the electrified stuff.
@poodledaddles1091

@@Chief667they plan to stay on this farm forever as well as pass it onto their children so permanent fencing would be a wise investment, of course it would have been wiser to have started many years ago. As you know the expense cannot possibly be a concern for this particular family, if so in a few years the boys will be big enough to put it in themselves. Their temporary fencing really seems ridiculous, but it does probably does make for interesting content:)

@@Chief667 I would differ. Regular electric fence, maybe 2-3 strands, would cost much less than that mesh stuff, and still be fairly moveable. Also, it carries current much better. Ask me how I know...

One thing about maggots is that -despite being gross- they will not eat healthy flesh. They will only feed on dead or dying flesh. In fact, maggots are still used in medical treatments on humans currently, though it is not well-known. -Dusty

@@lilymead5457 That's not true I have seen them be very transparent about their animals needing veterinary care. The fact they are even showing what they did today tells you they are not afraid to show the reality and that sometimes includes 'failing.' If they wanted to hide it you wouldn't see anything at all. I believe they will call a professional if they can not figure it out themselves but sometimes it just happens and it takes time to fix.

Wonder how many hours you spend on moving those fences. I watch videos of sheep herders in Europe and and their dogs just move their sheep with ease to a different grazing pasture. If the sheep need attending to, its a very calm gathering and they calmly lay them down. No chasing or grabbing them like you do. They know how to handle them.

On smaller acreage it helps to concentrate the animals on small areas at a time. Improves soil quality and foliage. All part of regenerative practices. Greg Judy and Alan Savory (Savory institute) has some great vids on this. I do agree tho…dogs would be easier and very awesome to watch! Check out one of Brad Leone’s newest videos. Why are you not making your own butter, sour cream, and cheese? Buying from other farmers is the same as buying from the grocery store. You are not eliminating the grocery store by changing providers of the food. You should not be allowed to own sheep. They live in pain and misery until they die, either sell them or get them a vet so they can live pain-free. So cruel, poor animals.
