Great video, glad that the folks in Buffalo went to Philadelphia for 2000 tons of ship and came back with 10,000 tons of ships 😄

I never knew what or how a naval ship was decommissioned, and again Shane you filled in the unknown. Great video and informative.

Shane - I came back on the Rock from Gaeta and was a part of the transition you speak of. As I recall when we left Gaeta, we first went to Rota Spain to off load munitions. I was a part to the line that hand carried the 5 inch shells off the ship. They had the bigger stronger guys carry the 6 inch shell. From there, our next stop was the Azores Islands. (I don't remember why we stopped there, may have been to refuel.) After that I believe we went straight into Philly. I don't remember us going to Norfolk. I wasn't in Philly long, maybe a week, before getting my orders to report to Little Creek, VA for my next adventure - the USS Shakori ATF-162, an ocean tug boat, that has it's own storied history. I'm a bit disappointed I wasn't able to stay in Philly long enough to be a part the decommissioning crew.

Thanks for your memories, stvmoe75! Appreciate you commenting on your experiences. From the Ship's Log, USS Little Rock left Gaeta, to Lisbon, to Azores, to Yorktown (Sorry, I must have said Norfolk) to offload weapony. There were a lot of practice drills and safety briefings for offloading the weapons on route to Yorktown. Thank you for your sacrifices...and hope you can make it here to visit your old ship, especially if you've never been here! Old salts really feel a connection when they come back!

@stvmoe75 - Hey there -- saw your reference to the Shakori. I was QM on there during that time. In late '76 we would have been helping recover the F-14 north of Scotland, but were back in LCrk by end of November. Last year I started volunteering at Buffalo Naval Park. Very rewarding (but had to learn weapons that tug boat sailors don't worry about). -- John Ostroot

@@johnostroot583 Hi John - I remember you. You had the Volkswagen Bug if I remember correctly. Are you on gmail or yahoo? I don't see a way to do PM's on here.

I wonder why they decided to offer the ship to be a muesum instead of scrapping her. Im sure some kinda of backstory is there.

Thanks Andrew...she was an important ship to the Navy during the 1960s and 1970s. There were very few ships of her class and being a flagship for 9.5 years out of the 16 years in her CLG configuration brought her the title of a "high profile ship" of the US Navy. I think the Navy was conscience of that and pegged her early on as a memorial. Hope that's something!

If they'd known they would be offered as a museum ship sooner, what do you think they might not have done - what more equipment left/not severed etc?

I think they would have still cut those "necessary" systems, but they may have left more equipment! Of course, the Navy came back to take equipment after she became a museum ship too! Appreciate your support!
