We had an awesome and welcoming experience cycling in Morocco in the spring of 2017 and 2018. We cycled on the same roads as you did and mixed wild camping and paying for accommodation. We were cheerfully greeted and invited on a daily basis for tea, food, and staying in people's homes or on their land. We are very grateful for this experience and the Moroccan people we met. Then this horrifying thing happened later in 2018, which apparently and unfortunately also left its marks.

"mkadam" means he is the leader of region , they work for the authorities. they always notify the police if they see something unusual. they are trying to protect you . but take my words morocco is very safe but Moroccans they dont have that mentality or understanding of someone doing an adventure sleeping in a tent. thats why you will hear too many say its not safe for you. dont let that play with your thoughts. Your title is a bit harsh. Honestly, I feel much safer traveling to Morocco compared to any country in South America or Africa. Additionally, I anticipate encountering much more warmth and friendliness from the people there than in most European countries. Note that these authorities only cared about your own security. However, I want to emphasize that this is solely my own perception, and it's important to recognize that stereotypes can often lead to unfounded fears and doubts. In light of this, I am currently preparing for a bikepacking trip in Europe scheduled for September, and while considering various destinations, I have decided to exclude the Balkans due to concerns raised by some individuals about racism. Although I believe these concerns may not be universally true, it is essential to acknowledge how stereotypes can shape perceptions! Cheers !

I think the main issue is you not being an examplary traveller, one of the basics is you doing your homework about the habits and customs of the people you're inviting yourself to their backyard. Did you ask yourself whether it is acceptable to them to host a couple they have no idea wether they are married or not? Did you do your homework searching what "Mekadam" means, I'm referring to the man at 5:30? Did it come to your mind that "Mekadam" might mean a government official? Did you listen to yourself commenting on him trying to tell important things as "making all kinds of gestures.."? Did you do your homework and tried to pick up the local language basics that will allow you to communicate efficiently? Imagine a Chinese person landing in a remote Dutch village speaking Chinese to the locals...you did the same. Be a good traveller, Do your homework before travelling!

Back in '94 I sat, with two buddies, outside a cafe at the top of the climb out of Chefchaouen, heading toward the Rif and Ketama, and a big Moroccan guy at the next table leant back over his chair, turned to us and said in English "This is not tourist country".. That was a little disconcerting but we really wanted to see the Atlas Cedar forests of the Rif then ride on down to Fez so we continued. Apart from another slightly disconcerting experience just after we passed thru Ketama (big hashish town) we only experienced kindness and hospitality from Moroccans.. It's one of my 3 favourite countries visited, Japan and Mexico being the others..

It is very sad to hear of any death under any circumstances. No Moroccan wish that on anyone. But, Morocco is very safe. Let’s not exaggerate. I defy any European to show me the stats or numbers of murders, rapes and assaults in their country. They are extremely higher than Morocco. I know as I live in the UK and read newspapers in 5 languages. People need to keep things in perspective. Some fall into racism by assuming generalising. In addition, Moroccan police and crime investigators are some of the best in the world. They always catch the culprits. Justice is a serious business for Morocco. In fact, something most European don’t know : in the fight against terrorism, Morocco is making great advances in preventing attacks on its soul and abroad. Lots if Western agencies call upon the expertise of Morocco in this field to help apprend terrorists. Morocco as a country takes crime seriously. This is why the number of murders is thankfully very low compared with Western nations.

Another rich and rewarding series of spectacular images juxtaposed with the underlying currents of angst as expressed in your narrative. Interestingly I ran into some strange behaviors on my first trip was way back in 1969 when my sister and I her quasi boyfriend headed out for a three night trip from New Haven, Connecticut east up to Cape Cod, MA via Rhode Island and up to the mid-Cape and then up to Boston, MA. We had clear plastic sheets as a tent/tarp and one evening the supervisor at the state park upon learning we did not have a real tent informed us that we would need to be out of the park immediately after first light! Of course so much has changed except for my passion for exploring upon my two wheels. It is so rewarding to know this spirit of adventure lives on in so many other lives…. I look forward to more episodes of your journeys… remain vigilant and god speed …. David

I don't know why you refer to yourselves as "bikepacking" when you appear to have a touring set-up. Is it because you're using big tires? A frame bag? Bottles on the front forks? I mean, look at Eric's bike load, I wouldn't call that bikepacking. Wondering then, how do you come to define what you're doing as bikepacking and not touring? In the broader scheme of things, of course, who cares what we call it, it's the experiences and adventures and people we meet that matter. A wonderful video, as always. So nice that after all the years you've been bringing us videos of your bike rides, you manage to remain humble and authentic.

As you say, who cares what you call it. As Eric explains in another video, it's more of a hybrid setup, which makes a lot of sense to me - most people 'bikepacking' are on short trips with minimalist gear. Eric and Maudi are on an extended trip in a remote area and need to be pretty self sufficient, plus a fair amount of gear needed for making it these amazing videos. Unrealistic to fit all that stuff in a few framebags!

I will never forget the stories of Louisa Vesterager Jespersen, of Denmark, and 28-year-old Maren Ueland, of Norway. There were videos of their decapitation on the internet. I saw one of them and it made me cry. They were in the mountains of Morocco when the grizzly murders occured. Some places are just not worth going. Please be safe. This trip is not worth your lives.

Very good advice! Nick Frischke and Ivan Ivanov were also tourists who underestimated the dangers, the violent crime statistics, and the prevalence of predatory aggression (home invasions or attacks on random people by those who prey on the vulnerable) of the country they were in.

I had so many unpleasant experiences in six weeks in Morocco that I considered it a waste of my time, and had been traveling for three years. Bad food several times, rip-offs, lies, pestering, dishonesty, bloody noisy gites, barking dogs, racial abuse, and ongoing wanton destruction of Roman sites by locals for souvenirs. My French was o.k. and I learned some Arabic and Berber dialect words. Morocco was the pits. No thanks.

I know a place where there are mass shooting every week. I think it is called USA. Not worth going. I've been to Marroco 3 times and what wonderful trips. Friendly people and incredible scenery. Everyone has a genuine smile and that cannot hide their true feeling of happiness, unlike how miserable and unhappy many people look in the big western cities. There are tourists everywhere in Marroco but just like everywhere else stay away from potentially problematic areas. To feel safer just book the local hotels for €20/night for 2 including breakfast. I think that's what those policemen wanted, for you to spread the western's wealth on the locals.

In the meantime I have watched many of your videos. What do I like the most? Well, thats the way you are filming, how your are building up a story. Then of course beautiful landscapes, insights into the culture of the country you are traveling to, interesting conversations with people. You are respectful of the environment, the people you meet and their culture. You're both doing that very well and convey so much optimism and joy. That would actually be contributions for television. Have you never been asked? Anyway- thank you for these extraordinary videos!

Wonderful video, thank you ! Technically super, great images and editing, with the perfect blend of your thoughts and interactions with other people. Keep riding, keep making these films, and above all, stay happy & stay safe!
8:49 the cutthroat thing was not threatening, people simply never forgot about the two young beautiful women from Denmark who camped and were brutally attacked by 3 ISIS affiliates and that was their way of letting you know it's not safe even tho the usual and the norm is 100% safe but that is how everyone behaved until that day happened and nobody was happy with that and people really got pissed off because of it and so from that day on we recommend that people shouldn't just camp anywhere even tho 99.9% of the times they would be safe the trauma of that day is never forgotten and so people try to avoid anything like that happening again. also, I can guarantee that when you were camping someone was up all night watching over you which we do now without letting the people know about it because they could feel they are being stalked or something creepy but we have a saying here ' if you were bit by a snake, you become prudent of the rope '. that is everything to it, we respect and welcome anyone who visits this country and we know it's not easy for anyone to set aside some cash and time and planning and visit someone else's country so we try or at least the vast majority of us try to be kind to the visitors. Morocco is everyone's second home and all we expect is people to keep that in mind when visiting or settling here and that is equivalent to earning yourself the Moroccan Nationality and since you travel a lot, if You ever run into Moroccans abroad, just tell them You visited Morocco and see how they will treat You like You were Moroccans, family.

We went with my wife to Morocco from Switzerland, with our van, for a month in 2019, three months after the attack on these two Danish tourists. The police were super nice but paranoid, we had to leave our bivouac spots twice to sleep in front of the police stations. Then we played hide and seek with them, camping where they couldn't find us. We love Morocco and the friendliness of its people.

Even in Europe and the United States of America, female tourists are often attacked and killed by criminals in Europe or America, as if the Danish or Norwegian girl is the last two people to be killed by a criminal or criminals ((Mercy to them)) Morocco is an independent country and the oldest civilization and monarchy among European countries ((according to what I read in the books of German scholars here in Germany)) The first civilization with a state and monarchy system appeared in Morocco 750 thousand years ago, and Moroccans told me They do not care about the opinion of Europeans about what they are doing to strengthen their country and make it safer than European countries. No European has ever traveled from his country, for example, Germany to France, except when they warn him of the possibility of being hated, for example, by drunken Frenchmen or Europeans. With regard to murders since the emergence of man until the end of time, and human crimes against other human beings, they have been present since the first human being until today Even the Europeans fought each other and killed each other in terrible ways, especially in the First and Second World Wars

Thank you for sharing your adventure, with all the work that filming entails. I love Morocco - I have been 3 times, always to wild corners of the country - in search of nature (birds in particular). One trip was different - a trek through the Jebel Sahro mountains over Xmas and NY. I’ve always been struck by the kindness and generosity of the people. And I love deserts and arid environments - they are exquisitely beautiful & peaceful, but always there is life if you look for it, and with respect. Reflecting on your experience, perhaps the filming is alienating for some cultures who want their corner of the planet to remain private.
