Great video Barrie! I’m in the States. But I have always loved the look of a stout German steam locomotive best. They just have a presence like no other. Thanks for sharing.

At 5:43, that spilled coal is there to make room for the gears in the tender. 13:18 Basically they merged with Roco. The duplicates in the catalog were sorted out by keeping the most recent model of the two. For a quick start in rolling stock: Roco offers an 8 car freight set for a very good price. Other manufacturers to consider are Trix, Liliput, Tillig and Piko

Hi Barrie, Sorry to see the state of Hornby lately, you've already gotten quite a few excellent Fleischmann models. I also have a Fleischmann Class 65, though it's a bit older than yours. They really are great runners, old suburban freight and stopping train service, meant for push-pull.

Glad to welcome another convert. I was lucky enough to get my first Fleischmann loco (080 class 55) at the tender age of 14 (1975!!). Cost 8 quid. Don't stick with just Fleischmann, check out Roco and Piko as well.

I love the Fleischmann locos as I have been collecting them for a few years now, the reason I collect them is their attention to detail on the locos is more prominent and they are there where other brands seem to forget or just don't do it as it is too much tooling to create the items needed.

Barrie, I have been a Fleischmann fan since the '50's. All their locos are designed to perform like the prototype for speed. All the steam locos are 4.2 metres to the chimney top. Two types of smoke deflector, Wagner (square) Witte (as your class 41.

These locos look great ,also I havnt bought anything from hornby for ages , but picked up on e bay what looks like a never or hardly used Coronation class Dutchess of Norfolk for under 60 pounds , and been after one for ages and one came up on ebay for a great price ,yes it's not one of the new ' singing and dancing ' hornby ones, but a older one from the 1980s but I like these older locos ,as parts don't fall off even if you breathe near Them.

Glad to see you also appreciate fleischmann. I have a collection of over 40 moany from the 70s and 80s which I convert to dcc. They really are well made beautiful models. Also I would suggest Roco and trix, which also make beautiful models.

Hi, European model railways are on another level compared to Uk model railways, the electronics they use is way advanced compared to what we see in the Uk model railways, you just have to see it to believe how advanced and amazing their stuff is, money well spent Barrie.

I had a problem with poor quality back in January this year with a Cavelex Models Class 56 that had a jammed gear tower and I even got silenced on RMWeb on their part of the forum for dare complaining about the quality. This month, Accurascale have announced a new Class 60. I will stick with them for my OO gauge Class 60's although I have since moved over to O Gauge earlier this month and I don't regret it one bit. I will never buy another model from Cavalex ever again. I never had a problem with Accurascale, Dapol and Heljan and I would be more than happy to support companies that are supportive. I got a lot of flack for calling out the issue on my Class 56 but I will not shut up and I will not back down to bullying either from fanboys. Great video though Barrie.

I gave upon Hornby and British locomotives a few years ago. I now have Marklin 3 rail ( stud contact) Analogue and Marklin digital, ok they aren’t inexpensive but are far better engineered models. Working lights, facility to install seuthe smoke generators, I’ve even bought locomotives already with digital (MFX) sound chips factory installed.

Hornby’s latest reincarnation of the Black Five has been a bit of a disaster with the new coupling arrangement between loco and tender. It hasn’t been getting great reviews here on KZitem.

Understand totally, the only problem is the scale difference. I run a mix of Jouef, Hornby, Trix and Bachmann. Older stuff, no NEM pockets and coupling is a major problem. 🤷

Also take a look at the Trix, Hornby-Rivarossi, Piko and Brawa ranges too. By the way many German locos were provided to other countries as reparations after WW1 so you will see variants in Belgian, Austrian, Italian and French liveries. Any other questions you might have please ask. Märklin 2 rail models were marketed as Hamo but, latterly, have been added to the Trix range. Märklin operate on 16v AC using stud contact.

Barrie after watching your magnificent fleet of Marklin locos I got as far as contacting a seller but discovered that they are not DCC ready and I didn’t want to muck up a lovely engine wielding a soldering iron. Plus I think my loading gauge on my layout would be an issue. But I can still enjoy watching you run your fleet.

Please oh please DON'T buy anything ! Marklin are 3 rail and run on AC; they will NOT run on DC. My loco's are all 'FLEISCHMANN' and are 2 rail and run on DC current. You are about to make an expensive error. Baz

Barrie if you want to know about German locomotives treat yourself to a trip to Nuremberg. It’s a beautiful city and has the DB museum right next to the main railway station. Also the Dortmund model exhibition has massive halls full of large layouts and many traders . It’s not a very pretty place though.

It is sad, that Hornby is now making "superdetailed" locos, that are unfortunately too fragile to actually run. We play too much emphasys now days for example on the thickenss of the flanges, that most of us cannot even see when the loco is on the track, than of the fact that model railway is about actually running them on a layout. What is the point of having super detailed prototypical unit if you cannot use the loco without breaking it. some, You only have to take them out of the box to break them. Fleischmann have in my opinion always been able to provide excellent detail in a robust and functional way. You can even pick up a fleishmann loco by the wheels/tie-rods without having to worry about bending them. Most are tender driven, but run superbly. I only have tree steam an a couple of electric and they are all very robust.

I disagree with Hornby needing to get rid of the other brands that are under their umbrella. They aren't the problem with Hornby. There's failings in that specific division which need to be addressed. Quality control is probably the biggest one. Which arguably is really hard to do properly when the factory is in China. The new team in charge of Hornby seems to want to address some of the failings of the company. For example that's why they had a really slimmed down announcement for the 2024 range, and even just two days ago with the mid-year announcements. Since they're still playing catch up with models promised more than a year ago. I'm still waiting on the BR Green J36 that I pre-ordered at the start of 2023. And there's other things they could be doing. Some of which they've addressed, and others they haven't. I know they've taken on board the suggestion of actually making a train set much more of an interactive experience than just watching it go round an oval. It's quite disappointing looking at starter sets to try and get kids interested, and seeing how miserable they actually are compared to stuff like the Lima Road & Rail set I started with in the early 90s. They've also acknowledged the "play factor" that a lot of us enjoy about the hobby, and trying to cater to that. And they're apparently focused on expanding the Railroad range for those of us not bothered about rivet counting and 100% accurate detail, and wanting to simply run trains on a budget. Although on the flip side there's things like the fact that they still don't see any issues with selling an HST "train pack", that doesn't include a passenger coach. The thing that would actually make it a train, and you would typically expect two or three of with their steam train packs. I'm hoping they can turn things around.
