thank you for being so transparent about all the cons! I thought that it'd be my ideal pencil with such a beautiful design + the auto advance mechanism, but with that high of a price it should've been more reliable. guess I'm on the hunt again for the perfect pencil, but thank you for saving me 20+ bucks on the orenz nero lol

People who are not used to automatic mechanical pencils, they tend to use both manual feeding and automatic functions at the same time. 0.5mm version fixes the problem of snapping leads.

Thanks for this honest review! One's on its way to me atm. I actually enjoyed the auto-advance of my 0.3mm Orenz metal grip in my note-taking but I found the lined knurling slippery. Decided to get the grid-knurled Orenz and the Nero, both in 0.3mm, to compare. Excited!

I got mine from Japan for about €14 and unfortunately mine has an issue out of the box. The lead sleeve doesn't retract securely. It often pops out on its own after 2-5 seconds. The lead sleeve also doesn't seem to retract completely, even on functional units. It always sticks out a little which annoys me (all my other retractable pencils can get this right). Also not a fan of the 12-sided grip. Your fingers are always on a sharp edge, and I see now why nobody else has chosen this design. It's still fine, just not great (meanwhile the Orenz Metal Grip has a fantastic grip). Also the automatic advancing requires the metal pipe to touch the paper, which isn't so much scratchy in my 0.5 model as much as it leaves a lighter graphite mark, which bothers me. Just not a pleasant writing experience for me. I'll gladly deal with clicking the button to get a smooth writing feel with dark lines. I think the Orenz Nero needs some more time to cook, work out the kinks. The Kuru Toga Metal in contrast improved immensely both in the design and the improved cushioned mechanism. It's what I always wanted the Roulette to be.

Very informative. Have got to say, as an artist, a lot of the downsides that'd be mitigated by light use (light as in light handed, not infrequent) high quality paper, and upkeep don't seem like they'd apply to me. Still though, this was a great informative video for me in terms of what I should expect when I eventually buy this pencil. Thanks for the video :D

I'm an artist, and these problems definitely apply to me. No many artists, outside of beginners, use anything thinner than 0.5, and for good reason. A LOT of very expensive art paper, has either loose fiber, or is textured, and both of these things are problematical for lead thinner than 0.5. This doesn't mean you can use lead thinner than 0.5, but it's best to use very smooth paper, and to use such lead sizes in a limited way on anything but the smoothest paper, and then only when 0.5 won't do the job. A better idea is to buy a Uni Kura Toga in 0.5, and one in 0.7. The rotating system on these pencils keeps any size lead needle sharp, which means you can get a 0.3, or even a 0.2 line width while getting the benefits of a thicker, stronger lead, and of a better built pencil. Check out Dan Beardshaw's channel. He's an extremely good artist, and he does almost all his art with a Kura Toga.

@@jamesaritchie1 untrue. Plenty of pros use 0.2 for adding details prior to inking.
@Emil_m

@@jamesaritchie1 the rotating system is actually designed to do the opposite. It’s designed to keep the lead wear the same all around, making it very useful for writing, because you want lines to be consistent. For drawing, you may or may not want this depending on your style. But if you want to sharpen the lead on one side, that mechanism will prevent it, and also make it more difficult to hold the pencil to use that sharp side consistently. I haven’t tried one personally, but from the videos I’ve seen, that’s what it does.

There is no proper long-term solution. The clutch is a manufactured piece that cannot be taken apart to be cleaned, and it’s so intricate that there’s no proper way to blow dust out or wash it out.

I have the 0.5 version and i use it for essays, works well, dont often have the problem with the metal part getting stuck on the paper. Though I will say the grip on it is not great for long writing, like you said because of the sweat that gets built up into the grooves. So on daily usage or to write simple notes i love the orenz nero, witht hat being said, i still do prefer my delguard for 45 min+ writing

Thanks for this great overview based on experience. Very much appreciated! I was really drawn to this pencil, purely for aesthetic reasons, but reading reviews about the pipe potentially scratching the paper (and I intend to use it on all kinds of paper) and after watching your video I just made up my mind that it’s just not for me. Looks like Pilot S30 isn’t available in 0.3 and S20 isn’t retractable. I’m gonna give Pentel Graphgear 1000 a shot, it’s retractable (the one with rubber spots) but I haven’t found it in retail so just gonna order it. I did try Pentel Q1003 (Smash) and found it to be both, more comfortable and slightly more stable than the Graph for Pro. On photos Graph for Pro looks better, but in real life I think both are equally good looking. Wonder why non-retractable pencils don’t come with caps though! 🤷🏻♂️

I've used the orenznero and i've used it on cheap paper from dollarama and it was okay. I think the reason some people feel it scratching on the paper is because it's 0.3mm which feels kinda scratchy if you are not used to it. And that they are using HB (harder) instead of B1 or B2 and those are usually softer so it doesn’t feel as scratchy. If you are scared of the orenznero being scratchy you should buy the 0.5mm and also if you don't hold ur pencil at a high angle I don't recommend this pencil
@Emil_m

@@Knightlight616 have you used it on watercolor paper, hot or cold pressed? I’ve heard people say the tube gets caught in the texture. I’m very comfortable with 0.3, and am now using Pentel Graphgear 1000, which retracts with a side-button, making it easy to transport. Excellent pencil overall, just not aesthetically interesting looking, which is important for me too. Do you have any problems with the tube, at different angles etc? Graphgear 1000, I can hold at any angles without problems. Let me know. Thanks!

@@Emil_m I've never used it on watercolor paper so I have no idea. When I use the orenznero at a high angle I can barely feel any scratchiness of the lead sleeve but when I use it at a low angle it's more scratchy and the lead sleeve has more contact with the paper which leaves a more noticeable mark. (I'm using ain Stein b1 lead 0.3)

@@Knightlight616 I guess I’ll stick with Graphgear 1000. Been using it past few days and it’s very firm and feels reliable no wobble at all. Nowhere near as attractive, but very ergonomic an the clip is never in the way. I like that I can write something then retract ( by pushing the clip open), and later when I push the button the tube comes out with the lead where I left it. There’s no rotation nor auto-extension, and both of those features have drawbacks for sketching. It’s actually a perfect pencil in every way. Well except the looks, especiallyin 0.3… I might try repainting it.

Personally, I don't like to use it with a ruler. The nature of the easily retractable lead sleeve means that it is more wobbly than something like my Rotring 800, and so is not preferable. However, it does fine in a pinch.

I've never been so left down by pencil before. Mine was literally broken right out of the box and it couldn't even write a single letter :/ what a huge waste of 30 bucks. I wish I knew in advance, I would have just stuck to my fountain pens. I read the reviews and saw this featured in the Jetpens videos and thought that would be great, I could use a mechanical pencil instead of always sharpening my pencils but the reliability of this pen is garbage.
@TsarumanTheWhite

I don't think you're looking at this the correct way, the pencil being broken out of the box is a manufacturer error, you can't say "the pen is garbage" when you technically never received a new pen, whilst in no way am I saying spend 20-30 more to get it again and see if you like it, you shouldn't assume that it's a horrible pen because you had a manufacturing error.

I have to admit that sliding pipe pencils are not my favorites, though I have several brands, including the Orenz. I do suspect it is not the pencil tip catching on cheap paper, but the lead itself. There isn't much exposed lead, but there is some, and 0.3 with catch on cheap paper with any pencil, if used at an angle. Sizes below 0.5 are not made for writing, and you will have problems if this is how you use a pencil with such thin lead. These are drafting sizes, and are also good for artists, if used in a limited fashion, but just aren't very good for writing unless you're willing to put up with regular problems. If you do need to use sizes under 0.5, those without sliding pipes have far fewer problems, and those with brass clutches have fewer still. Plastic and most metal will capture dust and hold it tight. Brass will not. Pentel is my favorite brand of mechanical pencil, but because of work I've done, because I'm an artist, and because I write a LOT with mechanical pencils, I only use drafting pencils. I have every lead size of the P200 series, a favorite with artists, and in the Graph Gear 500, 800, and 1000 series, along with the Graphlets, which I like quite a bit. I have zero problems with the 0.3mm in any of these pencils, but, again, I would never use such a thin lead as a daily writer. That's begging for problems. Outside of Pentel, I also have a Uni Kura Toga in 0.3, and quickly learn that constantly sharpening a 0.3 lead is a very bad idea. It cut even very expensive paper on occasion.

The Orenz pencils suffer from a problem that is the lead breaks inside the mechanism and it jams, very annoying. For that reason while I appreciate the automatic mechanisms for their innovation, I stay away from them. A better alternative to the Orenz Nero if you don't want the hassle of the lead breakout inside the mechanism is the Rotring rapid pro, it also has a sliding sleeve and cushioning, but doesn't have the auto feature which to me is a good thing, it's also very premium (I've experienced that with the regular 0.2mm Orenz, not the Nero so idk if it suffers from that too, but I've seen plenty of other people who had the same problem with the Orenz)
