I love how she re-created "the face" in her new Geico commercial.

she was the best vaulter in the world and she got so mad to herself actually, to have fallen on her landing. that is extremely hard for a magnificent 16 year old gymnast to get over.

Say what you will, but her face she pulled was NOT because the other girl won. It was because she didn't do her best...the best she's capable of. She was trying SO hard to stick the vault she ended up sitting it down. She was not impressed with her own performance and ONLY a hardcore athlete can understand that disappointment. She expected more from herself. She was fighting back tears and anger. She was not displaying bad sportsmanship. She was a 16 yr old who fell on her best event...

Also, I would posit that she's probably mainly not impressed with herself for not landing her first vault. There's so much pressure on gymnasts. And the hype about her vaulting skills was through the roof. And it's completely valid to have expected to hear your own national anthem in that situation especially.

I always tell myself not to read the comments on these videos. It's always non-Americans slamming Americans and Americans slamming the non-Americans. But curiosity always seems to get the best of me, and these comments are no different. Commenters across the globe need to chill.

@msjujubird She congratulated both podium winners prior to the face. Maybe you weren't watching the coverage and are simply basing your opinion off of what you see solely in this clip. She has No malice towards the other members and isn't upset about finishing second in the world. She's upset she didn't perform her best. Let's not forget aliya mustafina completely cold shouldering her coach after falling on beam. She is known to be a complete diva in the gym. This isn't the case with maroney.

What a bunch of baloney. This is a competition. All of these girls train long hours, often performing through painful injuries. It is simply absurd to demand that they always be on their best behaviour, so sweet and loving, acting like little princesses.

Ashley Wagner, my favorite figure skater, also showed her disappointment with her scores. Love her personality, not the typical skater saying stock phrases, 'Well, I tried my best,' giving no insight into themselves at all.

@msjujubbird and mckayla made this face for a grand total of 5 seconds. I do this when my nose itches. You are making quite the assumption about a 16 year old girl who trained for this moment since 3 years old. It's clear you've never competed in something similar to national gymnastics let alone the Olympics. You'd never understand.

I don't think any athlete would be impressed with losing or failing a serious athlete at least, 2nd place is the 1st place loser, it shows she cares about what she does to be disappointed in getting 2nd and not first, she's not arrogant or a bitch.

all the competitors got 2 vaults in the individual vaulting. her first vault got a really high score but her second one she got zero coz she fell - her first vault was good enough to put her in second on its own. a lot of the other gymnasts also fell in the finals as well so she wasnt the only one.

as this got to be a meme, i actually make this face during my commute if someone either switches lanes on me abruptly, i need to brake abruptly, rudely changes lanes as i'm accelerating and they accelerate faster to claim their spot in front of me; somehow her shifting lips has become iconic in her case. my commute is horrible, 40 miles, and i get plenty of "McKayla" meme worthy moments.

the defending champion fell on floor and she just smiled and hugged everyone. meanwhile maroney sat herself in the corner for the rest of the night with her arms crossed scowling and not speaking to anyone. being chosen for the olympics itself is a great achievement demonstrating talent and drive. many athletes cannot afford the trip. others are honored just to be picked. let alone be declared second best in the world on that particular day. to compete with adults, you have to act like one.

Ok if you arent a gymnast well let me tell you that was what she was working for so long. That was the only gold medal she was going for besides the team but idividual gold is more important. So yeah i wouldnt be impressed either. Vault is also my stongest event so not placing makes me sad when i tried so hard.
