@@rachkate76 Thank you for your response. However, I humbly agree to disagree with you. The reason being is personal experience and result. Also, although I do on rare occasion disagree with her, my sister is an Doctor of Homeopathic Nutrition. Where I agree is yes the sweet spot for autophagy is between 16-18 hrs depending on individual health. Where I disagree is autophagy merely starts at this point, it does not "go down" from there, quite the contrary it begins to amp up from there. Perhaps something for you to consider.

Every time I hit a weight loss plateau or feel stalled or have extra cravings; I do a prolonged fast (48 hrs). This was based on Dr. Berg’s advice. Works every time. My body tells me when I need one by stalling results. Make sure you go into your fast after loading up with salads, nuts and olive oil; eat salt lite during your fast and drink natural seltzer for hunger. It jolts your IR back into action. Love Dr. Berg who “walks the talk!!” Also, stop going to the gym when you stall, instead walk, swim, stretch or do tai chi. Reduce your cortisol by relaxation not cardio.

Since doing keto for the past three weeks, my hunger has practically gone completely and I managed to break that set point of 170lbs @ 27% fat. I am easily fasting 24 hours and trying to get my OMAD around 1-2pm which gives my body plenty of time to digest and reduce insulin before bedtime which is where I notice the fat furnace is most effective. Also found loads of veg on OMAD really fills me up, especially adding in cauliflower rice almost as a bulking agent. If anyone wants to increase their motivation, I highly recommend getting a scales which does weight, BMI, fat and water percentages and documenting your measurements naked every morning the moment you wake up and again when you are about to go to bed. Doing this everyday you see the impacts your choices have, you can make minor adjustments and it makes you forgo poor quality food/snacking which you would otherwise eat on impulse.

I was this way for 2 years--strict keto, very healthy etc but still stuck. And I fasted a lot, to no avail. I did EVERYTHING in this video. Total failure. Including an 18 day water fast. Hardly lost any weight and regained it immediately. I was loyal to keto, because it DID help me recover from severe stress and drop 50 pounds pretty quickly, and keep it off. But after about 6 months I hit the notorious keto plateau. I went carnivore for 3 months--felt great but gained weight. Back to keto but No Oxalates and low salicylates. Contradictorily, adding sugars from fruit and milk back into my diet finally fixed it but it took 2 months and at first had to go slow because body had "forgotten" how to process sugars. Here is a theory behind this-- Women are ultra-ultra-sensitive to stress signals from the environment, because of baby-making. Including from FOOD. Lack of fruit in diet for more than a year long, long ago would have signalled a massive environmental collapse. Which means, shut down thyroid and go into super-energy-conservation mode, of which extreme insulin resistance is part-and-parcel. The only way to turn off this massive cascade of STRESS hormones (adrenalin and cortisol) is to send a consistently different environmental signal to the body. Which means changing food inputs. Fruit made all the difference for me. But I had to start slowly. At first it spiked my blood sugar right to the moon--Now eating fruit overall lowers my blood sugars (over time) and doing this finally got rid of the blasted Dawn Effect problem I had. Still working on being able to handle starches--grains and legumes still are troublesome for me--but small amounts of non-potato tubers seem helpful. I havent lost weight yet but I truly do feel the reduced stress effect--it was as if one day an invisible weight lifted from my soul. Cannot explain it better than that, just that it was a tangible feeling. It was after that that the Dawn Effect vanished and I started waking to fasting blood glucose numbers below 100 at last. That is just my story...as one menopausal female very-plateaued very-strict former keto dieter. Although the advice about not taking advice from fat people may be true--unless they have already lost a great deal of weight?---Perhaps Women simply should not be taking dier advice from Men--whose hormonal systems are very different from ours!! Men handle high cortisol and adrenalin levels completely differently than women do! Long-term chronic stress shuts us women down! Eventually it will shut men down too, but their stress thresholds are much higher than ours. This is why mostly only women suffer from low thyroid function and Hashimotos. Our bodies switch into "oh-crap-its-bad-out-there-shut-down-energy-use" mode much more readily. Am toying with idea that Seeds--grains, legumes, and nuts--can also trigger this shutdown reaction on their own. Anyhow, if I eat any I start getting Dawn Effect again in a few days--but fruit, milk and tubers do not do this. Keto diet can be high in nuts...this could be a bigger problem than milk imo. It is probably the Omega-6 fats, veg oils--in these foods, that trigger stress mode. Certainly avoiding these fats like The Plague has also been critical to my recovery from Dawn Effect and persistently elevated glucose levels despite eating zero carbs! In fact, fasting made my blood sugars go even higher! My liver was cranking out glucose like mad. Not good--stressful!

that was interesting! i just started keto and i was planning to take break like every 2-3 months and eat carbs (wholegrain and fruit mainly) to avoid that my body forgets how to process carbs. and i agree that men have a different metabolism and hormonal system. how are you doing now? what would your advice be to other women like me?

@@riverratrvr9225 Avoid Mag Oxide. Get good quality Mag, not from China. Mag doesn't get into the system well, so by adding an amino acid molecule, which is chelation, you get much better absorption. There are a number of types of Mag. Mag citrate can give you loose bowels, and you may want that. Mag relaxes muscles, blood vessels, etc, so it's good to take at night, helps you sleep without drugging you. Mag to the body is like oil to a car engine. Helps with bone strength, too. I get mine from my local health food store. I started with 200 mg, but now I'm pretty set on 400 mg. Can go higher. The way to know how much you need is to up dosage until you have loose bowels. Then back off a little. I take some potassium, too. The combination also helps to prevent muscle cramps, and helps lower blood pressure. Many people do not lose weight for a good number of reasons. I make weight loss videos on my channel and the 1 thing I realized is that people get the wrong information and run with it. They want quick fixes like "drink ginger and lose weight in three days" kind of videos instead of going deeper into consideration that our bodies are not the same. What works for a 20 year old who is in college will not work for a forty-something year old who is struggling with extreme belly fat. Before you start your weight loss journey know your starting weight and get the best tips that will suit you as an individual. Great video.

And don’t reduce your calorie intake TOO much or you’ll downregulate your metabolism and make it even harder to lose weight. Also past a certain age you may have a set point. IDK...There's a difference in knowing what to do and actually doing it. I know a lot about what I SHOULD do about a lot of things...but getting myself to actually DO them is a whole other story. Divorced people can potentially give great marriage advice if they learned from the mistakes they made in theirs. Broke people can potentially give great financial advice if they learned from their mistakes. Fat people can potentially give great diet advice, if they know what worked in the past, but just fell off the wagon and stopped doing it themselves. In any event, all these people can probably at least tell you what NOT to do. 😆

I literally cried watching this video. I am a 48 year old female. I had total hysterectomy 3 years ago and am now 40 pounds overweight. I just decided to give this healthy keto a serious try. I have eaten pretty clean for years. I have been teaching yoga classes for 6 years now and am really struggling with doing that right now because I don't feel like I am a good example or inspiration for people. I have always been very muscular since childhood, but right now you wouldn't know it because of this layer of fat that covers everything up....and I now have a belly as well....and I am sooooo uncomfortable and downright miserable 😥Nothing has worked for me yet. I have to hope that healthy keto, intermittent fasting, and consistent exercise and sleep will work. Thank you for your wonderful videos. You're really doing a good thing here.

I really like these quickie videos to answer questions :) I have a question nobody talks about. You say we must fast for at least 18 hrs to "start fixing insulin resistance". So if the magic happens AFTER 18 hrs, does it then stop as soon as you eat food again? So am I only getting 1 minute of whatever process is happening to "fix insulin resistance"? Same thing with autophagy - other docs constantly say you have to fast at least 36 hrs to get into autophagy - but how long does it last once you start eating again? Can you show us a timeline of what's going on in the liver at different time frames before during and after eating? luv you doc! In other words, what exactly does "ketosis" mean on that timeline?
@JulesVega

What is happening when you fast especially if you are insulin resistant is you are keeping insulin very quiet which does two things; it allows your body to access stored bodyfat for energy this in turn encourages your body to be metabolically flexible(Just means you can burn fat or carbs), and then since your muscles have been deprived of glycogen(sugar) they don't RESIST they ACCEPT the sugar in your blood stream. To answer your question the after 18 hours and you eat again the magic does not stop until you overload your system with carbohydrates and your muscles RESIST taking them in. So intermittent fasting is a helpful tool to get your body to burn through calories more efficiently. Hope that helps. BTW-I'm not fat.

This described me! I'm on month 5 of keto. Had keto flu for like 3 or 4 weeks. But I stuck in there & kept learning because keto food is more satiating. I've slowly lost 15 lbs & have 10 more to go. It feels agonizingly SLOW! But I focus on the benefit that I'm not HUNGRY! I also eat dairy instead of plant based fats, but started reading ingredients. Switched to heavy cream with no additives, just cream; and also switched to Organic Valley grassfed cultured butter & some bacon drippings for my animal based fats. Egg yolks are also fatty. I also like olive oil. I personally had trouble with ACV. These small changes helped. I still am eating when I feel hungry, but I can go longer now. I also notice if I walk everyday that helps. I gauge my progress on a pair of favorite jeans I want to squeeze back into, not the scale as much. I can button them now. So be patient and yes keep learning. I lost one more pound since yesterday.

Started extending my fasts to 24, 36, 48 hrs. Got down to 168 and trying to get to 150 lbs. Fasting is amazing. You save money, have mental clarity and exercise becomes even more pleasurable where I really push myself to run faster longer. Love love love. Mikayla Peterson is an inspiration. I was advised by a loved one, who watched some doctor on KZitem, to have a cheat day every so often to confuse your body's metabolism, and that would push it to start working it's ketosis again. It made sense to her, but I was " up in the air with it". Nevertheless, since I had been plateaued for at least 4 months, not knowing what to do, and being very discouraged after hitting my halfway ideal weight loss mark, I tried it. Now, I'm struggling even more! I'm not continually gaining; it's more like gaining and losing as a weekly pattern. This video really turned on a helpful light for me!! Dr. Berg, if you feel it's necessary, could you do a video warning people about the false information I believed? Unfortunately, I do not know the name of the doctor who did the video. Thank you for your encouragement!! I'm at a 44 pounds loss, and have about 30 more to go! :)

I was diagnosed with CKD back in March and was scared into a mostly plant based diet (eGFR of 54, at 44 y/o) following you and a couple other channels, Dadvice for one - I’ve lost 40+ lbs and my eGFR is over 80! I’m still about 10lbs over a healthy weight but stuck at a set point so I watched this video and decided to extend my daily fast from 15-16 hours up to 20 hours today. I did a multi vitamin with two brazil nuts in the AM and water. At hour 20 I had about 2 oz of chicken, steamed carrots, steamed celery, and an apple. I added a little salt. I got the worst headache all of a sudden. I felt fine up until I broke the fast and wondered if it spiked my blood pressure or blood sugar. My co-worker noticed I looked flushed. I ended up having to go home, took some dayquil and took an hour nap to get the headache under control.

I was amazed at how quickly my hunger dropped when I started Keto. I dropped 40lbs but then plateaued 6 months later. I dabbled in IF and saw results. I was amazed at how good I felt while fasting. I was able to workout in a fasted state w/ energy. The hard part is remembering to do it and to commit. I only saw results from fasting for 18+ hours. I still have another 30-40 lbs to go. This video motivates me to get back on track. I know IR is still the problem...but I also know it's a process and it's getting better while I'm getting healthier. THANK YOU DR. BERG!!

I started eating healthier Vegan, Intermitting fasting I do 24 hours T and Th, cut all sweets and sugars, started pre and pro biotic, started vitamins, working out 6 days a week rotating upper and lower, started ACV and walking 2 miles a day. The only thing that has affected my weight loss is how often I keep falling off keto. I gained back 9 lbs, and have lost another 4. Hopefully no more falling off the wagon, because every time I fall off, the next 10 or so days back on keto are hell. I get EXTREMELY depressed for about 10 days, and then when I'm done detoxing from sugar, I feel great. Don't know why I let temptation get the better of me. I guess I truly am a sugar addict. ☹️

This video really spelled out all the key summaries I had learned about IF but was not able to synthesize to a key point; which is, "if you can't fast btw meals or for longer periods of time, it means you are IR." Keeping insulin low is really the secret to life long weight management. One area that hurt me was gluconeogenisis. I was consuming way too much protein and fat. By cutting down my protein intake to 3 0z of meat, consuming more vegetables and fruit and moving my main meal earlier in the day, I am finally moving forward w my weight loss. My fasting is generally between 6pm and noon the following day.

Hello Dr. Berg, thank you again for your wonderful tutorial. I am on my 7th week of intermittent fasting at 23 hours per day! Prior to this I was eating two meals with a 16 hour fast. Now I'm only eat one meal from 12 to 1. I think the most challenging step for me was cutting out the carbs in the sugar. Outside of those hours I'm only consuming herbal tea and water. My severe hunger attacks have subsided and the only time I'm feeling that I want to eat is around 8 at night. I will reach for tea and/or water and distract my mind and it will surpass. I've been very diligent with this and very happy that I've lost 25 lb., but I still have a fair amount of weight to lose and wondering why the scale has barely moved in the past week? What could possibly be slowing my weight loss down?

Dr. Berg! I’ve been watching your videos and learning a lot for the past three months. I think my condition is very unique and unsolved until now. I’m writing to tell you about it so that you know that your advices do NOT work for everyone. Of course, we need to ADAPT your hints and suggestions, no doubt. I suffer under episodes of HYPOGLYCEMIA since my teenies. First time I passed out was after a food poisoning (source: meat) when I was 15. Had glucose injected into my veins to „come back“ after severe loss of fluids, etc. I got better the next day and everyone forgot about it... Next episode the next year, I was 16, unrelated to any food poisoning, when I was coming home back from school with my sister. It was a very hot sunny day and I skipped breakfast, had nothing to eat until past 12 pm and passed out at the bus station. First the cold sweating, weakening, confusion, couldn’t speak, short breath and boom, blackout. People at the bus station helped us and an unknown man stopped the car and brought me to ER. He saved my life that day! Again glucose into the vein and I only remember waking up in the hospital. My Mum Never brought me to a endocrinologist and find out what was „wrong“ with me.. Nor I had the wits to do it on my own. Sadly. Now, after living decades under fear of having another episode I am finally „fixing“ my body. I went already to three different endocrinologists and sadly, again, couldn’t get the professional help I need. I will cut the details but I can only say: SHAME on „doctors“ who don’t even know what they are exercising! One, the last one, a young man on his 20s „decided“ I had HYPERGLYCMIA (????) and wanted to stuff me with Hormon medication! He even wrote a WARNING on a letter to me. Only god knows if this is in my files... I simply ran away from him. This was about five years ago when I was trying to check on my thyroid. In my family there’s a story of diabetes mellitus (grandma) and hypothyroidism (mother) and I myself had pre-eclampsia (gained over 20kg during my first pregnancy) once. My gynecologist set me on a diet of cucumber soup without salt and loads of water on the last three months of pregnancy... NOTHING ELSE but supplements and thanks him I didn’t gain any more extra weight. So after this first pregnancy and eclampsia episode I “woke up” and started changing some of my diet. I was already always fearful about the hypoglycemia and kept eating small snacks the whole day AVOIDING FASTING OUT OF FEAR of passing out again. But, this was before the internet and the information was scarce. I will resume it because it’s too much info. I can’t stay long periods of time without food. Usually in the mornings if I don’t eat something right after before waking up I start feeling “weak” and it scares the hell out of me! I corrected my sleep now after four months following a new diet which helped me to lose already 10kg! I am happy with it and my overall health is better. I feel it. The tiredness, fatigue and lack of motivation in the mornings ARE GONE (thanks god). And I managed to fix the sleeping issue too. I’m losing weight even though I do not exercise at all. I do yoga day in day out and I walk a lot but I don’t go to any gym any more (last time in 2017 and stopped the next year after my right knee started to show deterioration because of the overweight :( It was the alarm saying “LOSE WEIGHT FIRST”. So, my question to you is how come I can produce this DEADLY amount of insulin????? And still be overweight???? I lost already I’d say 60% of my hair volume. It started 15 years ago. I started to lose hair intensively. I don’t know what to do. I am taking suplements (Omega3, K2, etc), eating a low carb diet with lots of meat and fish, following a reasonable eating schedule and so that I don’t fast to long due to the fear of “passing out”, sleeping properly and keeping my body hydrated. It’s working, I’m losing weight and feeling better. I fixed my HORRIBLE 2 AND A HALF MENSTRUATION PERIODS (!) seven years ago by cutting refined sugars, fast food of all sorts, manufactured stuff, just as you say in your videos. And my menstrual period regulated by itself after the FIRST MONTH without consuming this trash and occurring normally on a three days period without over bleedings, migraines and hand pain. So, I am a construction site. Still I know I can’t get rid of the Hypoglycemia :( One week ago i started reading about INSULINOMA and alarms went off again... But would I live so long carrying such thing?! Dr Berg, do you have any advice for me? Or any specific TEST I should do? I would like to go to my HAUSARZT (general practitioner) with these ready on my lips. Here it must work like this... Thank you for all your teaching and sharing! Yours, Tara - from GERMANY

Im a type 2 diabetic. In June of last year, my a1c was 6.9. Today my a1c is 5.0. I been fasting/IF and keto since June of last year. I have lost 80 lbs but I seem to be at a stuck point. I want to lose another 30lbs which will get me to just under 200. I had a homar-ir test done last week, its result was I am at 14.7. I probably don't even eat 10 carbs a day. According to the calculator I found online, that means im around 2.8 on the insulin resistance. 2.9 and above was listed as severe. I can't really go much lower carb-wise. I've cut out 99% processed foods. I haven't eaten anything white in a year, no fruit, no nothing but strictly keto. You would think after eating this way for a year, that my insulin resistance wouldn't still be that high. My blood sugar readings 2 hours after eating are almost always in the 80-90s range. Highest I have seen in months is 108. When not eating, my levels are usually between 70s and 90. I am mostly carnivore. Most of my meals now are eggs for lunch and chicken wings for supper. A steak every now and then or maybe some brats. I do eat some veggies. Usually green beans or maybe some baby carrots. I spent 8 months fasting 42 hours chunks, usually 2-3 times per week. I am 18/6 IF every day. Just how much more restrictive do I need to be to get rid of this insulin resistance? At this point, I am seriously starting to feel that I just cant get rid of this IR and yes, it's incredibly frustrating.

If I didn't restrict my calories I probably wouldn't lose weight. But it's not a problem with me since ketosis handles my cravings and hunger.

This guy is the MAN! 10 years ago I was 10% body fat and I wasn’t trying, I never ate breakfast anyway back then and didn’t really eat carbs, then got married, had kids and started eating all the time, I put on 30kgs in 10 years, it’s time to go back to how I used to do it methinks

I have MTHFR too, but can't tolerate methylfolate. And I have to take methyl b12 one day, then methyl b6 the next day.

I discovered Dr Berg quite by accident. I'm enjoying the keto types of food way more. Like he said I was exercising a lot and still looked chumpy. So I went keto,I fast for 21 to 24 hours, have little to no carbs, (bread, noodles, rice) and don't miss them or crave them. My weight has slimmed down and stayed down to 74 kilos and I'm about 5'8 tall. I think I'll post a vid on my almond, Spinach, Thai Green Curry patties everyone loves them and very little carbs.

Thank you for this video. I’m 26 and extremely active and health conscious. I’ve been active and dieting for the past year and have only seen a small shift in my weight. I gain muscle easily but cannot loose fat! This is the first video that gave me actual answers and didn’t just say I’m doing everything wrong. I’ll take your advice. I have high hopes that it will work!

Just carry on and let them see your results. I've given up trying to explain to certain family members! Luckily my brother and I are both into health and nutrition so I can have great conversations with him about this sort of thing.

I think I have just moved away from that, as my hunger turned off quite suddenly. One day I was so hungry and I could have fallen off my Keto plan and then one evening we came home late and I did not want to cook that late any more, so I only made a quick shake with two stems of celery and half avocado and hubby and I enjoyed just a drink. We were full and the next morning I thought I was going to be famished, but nothing like it. Hunger was not even on my list first thing in the morning as usual, but I felt really really free and light and happy. What a difference. I started breakfast at around 11.45am instead of the usual 7.30am. The whole day started so much better. Just like giving up smoking. All of a sudden, you have a breakthrough and it makes you happy and confident.

Don't forget stress - the right body can remain the same weight or even gain weight, even if you are totally keto the Dr Berg way, if you are under a great deal of stress...
