There are people (some relatives, some friends, etc.) who we are better off not having in our lives. Some of them are terrible people, some of them just have terrible habits that create conflict, pain, or chaos. Cut them out of your life like a cancer…. and just like with cancer, be willing to give up some of the healthy relationships (for example, if cutting out your toxic dad results in losing contact with his cool brother, than that relationship has to go to…) YOUR mental and emotional health and well being are too important to sacrifice; let toxic people stay in each others lives and ruin each other, but don’t allow them to stay in your life; and do what you can to not be toxic for others…. Gary, I know the divorce has been tough, but your life will get back on track. It’ll be a different track, but it’ll be good again, and soon…. Hang in there!

Hi Gary, I just want you to know I’m sure your kids still love you. Just keep trying and hopefully they will meet you for dinner one day. Kids feel caught in the middle. Since the mom was hurt the most, of course they want to be there for her and protect her. But you will always be their dad. These days everything makes it to the internet so you probably will be better off talking face-to-face. It’s ok to send a note and ask to meet up. One day, they will do it. At least you can say you tried. Your dad was just being messy.

Gary, hopefully you guys can get into family counseling. There are no winners in divorce. When children are involved, it is even more difficult because children don't talk. They don't want you guys to feel like they are taking sides. They are suffering but they need a neutral place to feel comfortable enough to share. In terms of your dad, just keep trying. My father and I had a very strained relationship for decades. However, at 93 we finally got the good, bad and ugly out and had a wonderful relationship. My dad died at 103 in 2019. It is not too late. You can't build a relationship on gifts. You have to build it from the heart.

Thats messed up. I am sorry you had to go through all of this non sense. I can relate because my Mum was never there for me. My dad took care of me somehow since I was a baby, even though he was battling with drug addiction. After he passed away from a overdose when I was 14 she literally disappeared again. I reached out to her when I was 19 and forgave her. Even though never once she apologise or had any good reason why- no addictions or anything like that. Fast foward about 15 years she stopped talking to me just because I didn't take her side and remained imparcial when she had a disagreement with my sister in law. She stopped talking to me... its been 2 years no contact.... It took me all this years to realise she just aint worth it , I have accepted she's who she is, a cold bitch. And I will just move forward with my life.

Sounds like your relationship with your dad is toxic, through no fault of yours. It’s best to cut him out of your life, for now. He'll just keep disappointing you, whenever he wants to. Use the distance to _try_ to forgive him and move on. Forgiveness will set you free! It’s not easy to do, though. Everybody's got somebody in their life like your dad. If they don't, they will one day! Good luck to you. ❤
