Congratulations John on the new addition to the family. The line historically was built in the 1880's by the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe (ATSF) Railroad as part of their Transcontinental railroad (aka the "Transcon") from Chicago to Los Angeles. Although ATSF acquired other railroads over the years, their merger with Burlington Northern (BN) railroad in 1995 created Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF). In those early days of the railroad in the United States, work crews could only maintain 7-10 miles of track, so there would be a small "company" town built to support the railroad workers at similar intervals. As technology advanced the number of miles that work crews could maintain increased, and many of those towns are either gone or a fragment of their heyday - Mendon is one such town. BNSF has upgraded a majority of the Transcon to dual track, being that there are 70-90 trains per day, the one exception being where the line crosses the Missouri River at Sibley, Missouri (and BNSF is working a plan to rebuild that bridge for dual track). Because the line passes through one of the busiest rail centers in the United States in Kansas City Missouri, traffic for quite a ways around Kansas City is managed with all of the major railroads operating out of a Joint Dispatch Center in Kansas City (at least BNSF, Union Pacific, Kansas City Southern and Norfolk Southern are represented at the Joint Dispatch Center), with them only handing off to the BNSF Fort Worth Dispatch Center during irregular operations. Of the 70-90 trains per day, only 2 are passenger, the Westbound and Eastbound Southwest Chief. All of the remaining trains are freight, operating at a maximum speed of 55 MPH. Because Amtrak is a customer of BNSF and the other railroads, if they are delayed departing Los Angeles or Chicago for any reason, the traffic on the Transcon can make the delays worse trying to fit a faster passenger train amongst all the slower freight trains. BNSF has been working with many local communities all along the Transcon to convert passive crossings into active ones with lights, bells and gates (barriers), due to the volume of traffic on the line. But with hundreds of these passive crossings, they obviously have to take a risk assessment into account and plan accordingly. Around the town I grew up in along the Transcon, many of those crossings were upgraded in the 2000's, but there are still many more to be done. Hope this additional history and background helps.

Yes it does ... sadly ... no one with any authority is listening, nor do they care. They only want passenger trains to run to the suburbs ... so they can get normies to ride them ... ... and so they can annex the 'burbs and tax 'em/crime riddle 'em to death. ... speaking as a former environmental regulator, I've had the discussion with politicians - including Republican Potus candidates and Dems all the way up to a state governor ... ... the look on their faces when one starts dropping facts, regs, stats, and obstacles to safety, efficiency, and other matters ... tells you all you need to know about the decline and fall of the Roman Empire - much less our own. As to these uncontrolled crossings, many are on a 'hump' so trucks are reluctant to fully stop as may be difficult to get over them, especially fully loaded or afraid of stalling out, bottoming out a low trailer and getting stuck.

Congratulations on the new addition to your family :) If you want to cover a more obscure disaster that I haven't seen *anyone* take on is the 1990 collision of an Amtrak train on the NE Corridor with a passenger commuter rail train waiting to depart Back Bay Station in Boston. Back Bay is the penultimate stop on that line for NE Corridor Amtrak trains before the terminus at South Station (damn the lack of a north/south rail link in Boston). Back Bay isn't named for the place it sits next to or a random posh name; it's named for what the area used to be: the literal Back Bay. When Boston was just a growing hub of a city at the end of a long isthmus, the back bay was a kind of shallow-ish inlet of the sea, brackish and in back of the city between it and other suburbs on the the mainland, and it eventually was filled in for development. On the Amtrak intercity service train, there was an older engineer training a newer one with much less experience. There's also a fairly sharp turn as the train enters Back Bay. On roughly parallel stretch of track, but separated by a concrete wall, are the MBTA's (Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority) commuter train lines (so, heavier trains, and. not the subway). Again, it's usually their penultimate stop, continuing on to South Station. This train was waiting a bit to pick up passengers, as it was later in the night before service stopped. The Amtrak train was running late so the senior engineer either didn't notice (until it was too late) or thought the train could handle it, until the train derailed on, or just after, the curve coming into Back Bay Station. This derailed the train, obliterated a concrete wall and slammed into the Amtrak commuter rail train with its occupants still aboard, and it pushed one engine (either one from the commuter train or one from the Amtrak broke through Dartmouth Street, one of the ones running above the station, causing traffic to be detoured for days. While it was touch-and-go for a bit, the Boston Fire Department (and other local assissting departments) were able to rescue everyone, even if there were serious injuries. If that one doesn't strike your fancy, there was also that big explosion in Danversport, MA, right before Thanksgiving in 2006(?) that destroyed homes and knocked others off their foundations. I have family in that area and was out-of-state so I was so nervous! Anyway, congrats again and as we say in my language, Onnittelut uudesta vauvasta! Toivottavasti teillä molemmilla on vielä aikaa nukkua... (congratulations on your new baby! I hope you can still find time to sleep now...)

What's especially sobering about this is that those of us who live in the rural USA know that pretty much every small town in the country has That Railroad Crossing, the one all the locals know and loathe. The one folks have tried to get the railroad or the state or _somebody_ to show some interest in fixing for years, if not decades. I've rode the Southwest Chief several times both ways. Takes 3 days and 2 nights to get from Chicago to LA, but I enjoy it, especially if I get a sleeper roomette. Passenger trains can be a pretty comfy ride, and accidents are rare, but things like this make you wonder how awful it would be for those inside these rail cars when they are involved in collisions or roll-overs. There are no seatbelts or airbags inside them, just some padded seats and lots of metal fittings, doorframes, tables, etc. If you are in the process of walking between the cars you are in even greater danger one would imagine. Still my favorite way to travel, though, especially eating in the diner car with random passengers and having conversation.

In theory he should have heard the horn or the train but with a fully loaded truck he was probably too slow to get away. this would have been a lot less likely to happen to a local - the truck driver was probably just trying to get to the jobsite without delay as it wasn't far away. But he sadly can't explain himself anymore so we will never really know. I don't really think there is anything that can reasonably be done about all the crossings that are like this because there are just too many of them. maybe it would be easier for people who do public works like this to mitigate the danger by having something like a temporary traffic light in front of the incline, but that seems like wishful thinking.

Our new local light rail system keeps being shut down for defect after defect - it seems to have been a complete mess in design and implementation. Your videos remind me that while the shutdowns are frustrating, this is what it looks like when the safeguards are *working* and everyone is paying attention - we have far too many problems, but at least they're being caught and dealt with rather than pushed down the line to "future me" because of the cost of repair. Latest set of nonsense is axle damage, bearing damage, and yesterday they've found the wheels have been rubbing on the guide rail somehow. But we found all of that via proper inspection, not in a post-crash investigation. And I am so thankful for it.

But poor visibility makes thing’s significantly more complex for a driver who isn’t impatient, but is simply trying to cross the tracks safely. Lol, I thought I was the only one who uses that term so it was wild to hear it from an Englishman. And in reverse, too; I think he said "butt" which is the US term, and here in the US I've always used "bum," the British term. Weird, but I often love his turns of phrase. Great video too.

Congrats on the girl. Please come back to this topic when more information arises. I took that route to Washington years ago from Chicago. I wonder if it was the same train. We hard a horrible experience with toilet malfunctions then dining car and viewing car detached so we only had a cabin packed with nothing to do

I grew up with such crossings, several being on my route between my home, my place of work, and my girlfriend's house. You very quickly learned extreme caution on these humped, unguarded, deathtraps. The dump truck driver in this incident was likely NOT a local to this area, so didn't know the adaptations that locals would use to ensure safe crossing.

I had never even heard of this particular crash. It really is a damned shame given how well known the issues were, and how preventable it seemed to be. Your channel has been one of my absolute favorites for years now. I have found myself inspecting the world around me more often, looking for potential problems that may go unnoticed, thanks in large part to the stories that you have presented. @railfandepotproductions it was so long ago, I don't remember exactly. But it was most likely in S.C. or GA. There were still some sketchy crossings and bridges way out in the country back then.

Legally the truck needed to stop at least 15 feet from the crossing before moving forward. But you did a great video here talking about the issues. Personal cars and trucks would be at a higher risk sense they don't need to stop, so I do agree that this was a diester waiting to happen. Have a thumbs up and a great day 👍

This is just one of hundreds of these BFN crossings in the U.S...there were no RR lines in my neck of BFN, just intersecting country roads with hairpin curves and no stop signs. About 2% of my graduating class died in auto crashes within 5 years. I was not careful, just lucky ☘️ Caught you in another channel, unfortunately I forgot it, but did comment how PD has informed me about orphan radiation sources for years 👍 Oh and congrats on your family addition 👏

We had such crossings in areas where the population was fairly dense, too. The one near my girlfriend's house was very near a housing development that contained fairly well-off families, including the Ripkins of Baseball fame. The crossing was between the development and a four lane local highway, so wasn't even an obscure crossing.

If more people actually stopped, looked and listened, like you are supposed to, there would be less accidents. You don't need gates or cameras at every crossing and even with gates, idiots still go around them and get hit. Seems to be a more American thing with going around gates and getting clobbered for some reason.

Congratulations. In your diagrams of the crossing, one very important omission is the acute angle at which the road crosses the tracks, which can further limit the truck's line of sight and calls for an extra degree of caution by the trucker. Also, the angle of collision significantly affected the lateral forces on the locomotive contributing to the derailment of the passenger cars. The two daily Southwest Chief trains (one eastbound and one westbound) are the only two trains authorized to travel at 90 mph on this stretch of track; more than 40 freight trains (the number varies with market conditions) use this route daily at a maximum speed of 70 mph. Furthermore, US railroads have all right-of-way over highways unless specifically designated otherwise (and navigable waterways have right-of-way over railroads.) Everyone is taught in driver's education to be extra vigilant at rail crossings, but many in this country simply don't seem to pay attention in class!

Thank you for covering this! I remember when it happened, and I was wondering what the investigation uncovered. If you want another suggestion for a short video, take a look at a railway crossing collision in the middle of winter in Utah involving a FedEx truck. Although no one was seriously hurt, it is a very unique situation because it involved a crossing that _did not_ activate, which is exceptionally rare. Even more unique is that the signal activated _after_ the train passed. There is some insane dashcam footage from a nearby police cruiser covering the entire incident. A signals engineer was fired in response to the incident because they had improperly reset the crossing after complaints of it going into safety mode, without finding the cause. The actual cause was a faulty sensor that left half of the crossing unprotected. The failsafe activated correctly, but after the engineer cleared the fault, it happily ignored the fact that the sensor was broken. Worst of all, whenever there is a known signal fault, locomotive engineers are required to come to a stop at the crossing before crossing it. But because the fault was cleared by the signals engineer, the train crossed the crossing at line speed. The speed and mass of the train cut the trailer in half and spread parcels all over the place. Thankfully the cab wasn't struck and was simply spun around. The road was extremely busy under extremely poor blizzard conditions, so it's a miracle that no one else was struck.

It baffles me how train crossing security measures are so often not taken seriously.
