he also played in Clapton's band for years and would perform one or two of his hits. he also famously called himself the 5th Beatle because of his work on Let It Be, but the Beatles never did. he had a knock 'em dead Ray Charles imitation that he did for years, until he did it for Ray. Ray told him there was already a Ray Charles. a good keyboard player, singer and a almost good composer.

I was fortunate enough to see Billy Preston at the RRHOF about six months before he died. He was being interviewed by the dirertor of the Hall. Only 200 people could get tickets. While it was a Q and A session Preston had a small keyboard set up and interspersed the conversation with examples of what he contributed on Beatles recordings, when he toured with the Stones, and his own stuff. It was an amazing evening. At the time of the interview Preston was in the last stages of terminal kidney failure. He could only travel to towns where dialysis was readily available. With the cleveland Clinic just down the street from the Rock Hall we had the privilege of hearing some very cool stories and listen to a master of the keyboard.

Billy was amazing... self taught... no musical training... and a chameleon musically... gospel, jazz, rock, funk, soul... he just could play it all! In the same vein as this song, "Will It Go Round In Circles" was a great song... he also had a couple minor hits that were instrumentals... one I had on a 45 record, "Space Race"... which featured him on the synthesizer... fun stuff... but some of the most notable stuff for me was his work with the Beatles towards the end of their career and on some Beatles solo stuff. I'm not sure if you've played "Get Back" by the Beatles yet, or not, but that's him on the keyboards. He's also in their famous last gig...
