A highly underrated film. Jackie Gleason's final film performance is a gem. Hanks is brilliant, as usual.

This truly is my favorite Tom Hanks film. Besides being great to look at, he delivers a sensitive yet comedic portrait of a son dealing with aging parents. I have the soundtrack on CD which is fantastic. It includes my favorite Carly Simon song “If it wasn’t love.”

The Carly Simon song & montage, "If it wasn't love at all" still nails me because Bess reminds me of my ex a great deal. This movie is not only up there with CRAZY PEOPLE & How to Get A Head in Advertising as an adman flick, it also perfectly captures the essence of the late 80's romantic zeitgeist.

I love movies like this one. I decide to watch them just because my favorite actors were in them but they end up becoming my favorite. This is how life is. We gotta start to value our friends, family, moments before they kick the bucket. Tom turned a lotta good films into memorable sweet ones just by being the terrific actor that he is. The women were beautiful here. Jackie Gleason sure killed it. *22 May 2024*

I finally got around to seeing this movie. It was... okay. It was just okay. The biggest problem I had with it: this felt like a Lifetime movie that just happened to be well-made in places. Individual moments work quite well, such as the scenes between Gleason and Hanks. Those moments felt real. Unfortunately, the movie barely even has moments like that. It's mostly trying to tackle way too much (the business deal at the advertising agency, Hanks' exciting fling with Sela Ward, his best female friend who he has a real connection with, and his father losing his job and dealing with a worsening case of diabetes), the parents splitting up feels like a total afterthought and yet it's showcased in this trailer as the main throughline of the picture. Truth is, this movie doesn't know which of its stories it wants to focus on. And, so, for two hours, we just watch this movie doing everything but what the trailer promised. It was a really frustrating watch because all the other stuff that isn't about the parents is very predictable if you've ever seen a movie before. You know who Hanks is going to wind up with in the end, you know which path in life he's going to choose, and none of it is a surprise.

Great film but sometimes hard to watch as this would be Jackie Gleason's last film. He was not well by then but closed out his career with a great performance. If I ever met Tom Hanks I would ask him what it was like to work with the legend. Gleason had such an amazing life and career. He went away for a long time then came back in 1978 at age 62 and established new stardom with the younger generation in the Smokey & the Bandit films as well as others. He was as busy in the 1980s as ever.

I would like to think that many watchers of this movie watch it in a rather superficial fashion. The movie needs more views than one for you to realise that most scenes says at least two things or are links to what is to come further on. Just love this move and what it tries to do - and yes: you can't help but get a slight crush on Donna Mildred Martin. Bess Armstrong is such an undervalued actress and adds such a lovely energy to the flick.

Movie had great performances, but was slow, predictable and cliched. Were it not for the strength of Hanks and Gleason's performances alone, the movie would have been unwatchable. Their performances kept it watchable at best, and forgettable at worst. Hanks did better in Big two years later which was directed by Penny Marshall the sister of this film's director Garry. Even Garry had better films later on, Overboard the following year and Pretty Woman four years later. As for Gleason this was a great final performance, but it was just in the wrong movie. He deserved a better story and script than this.
