With the present design, it seems that the balls bounce before settling to provide motive power. I was thinking that soft rubber cushions where the ball hits at the outside would eliminate the bounce when it hits. When the balls are airborne so to speak, their weight won't assist the rotation as much.
@tasosne

o.k. you are the first to notice that. Here is the explanation: when I instal the motor, the rubber band that I had (which by the way is not rubber) was a bit longer than it suppose to be. So I twisted it, then change the polarity to my motor and it worked. I hope that I won't bothers you any more... !!!

Thanks for your comments! I am very pleased that you like my work. If you see the original "blueprint" by Leupold, at the beginig of my video, there are 12 balls and ball holding partitions. So you must be right. BUT DON'T FORGET: it's a perpetual motion machine that DOES NOT WORKS!!! Μany scientists prooved that... If you keep watching my youtube channel, in a few days I will upload a video with a simple explonation why these machines don't work, based on the highschool physics...

Hello from Greece! I really appriciate your comments! They are really good and if we put what you suggest in the machine, it would probablly work better! But.... My intention is to make a replica and teach my students (I teach physics in highschool) that does NOT works. Because of the conservation of energy, 2nd law of thermodynamics, moment of inertia etc... You can look at my other video "Nothing Works (Reloaded)" for those explanations. At the end of the summer I will finish my 2nd machine...

Notice that a lot of energy is lost while the balls moves and hit the corner, change the proportions, use a lower sized path for the balls, so they wont hit the structure, the idea is that they move and act as a weight only . Just by looking at it you can tell that aditional forces were aplayed to the system

at 1:20 you will find a "button" (up-right) that will take you to the "Nothing Works (Reloaded)" video. There, you will find the explanation. It is the torque against the moment of inertia. The moment of inertia wins...

@tasosne another thought. The noise when the balls hit the outside of the wheel is loud. A lot of energy is being lost here. If the outside of the wheel contained piezo crystals to absorb the impact & generate electricity, Id suspect even greater efficiency could be achieved.

Would a similar design albeit more thought out and built to exacting standards have any chance of working if you could eliminate friction? For arguments sake? I mean in theory, say in a vacuum and with a friction-less center support? Not trying to solve perpetual motion but instead just trying to understand why it does NOT work.

I too started to make this, just to prove it. I quickly realised whist CAD'ing it up that if you take the position of the balls at their minimum & maximum distance from the centre bearing, you quickly realise that at any moment in time there are more balls being lifted that those creating the lift, and that the difference in the distances from the centre are NOT enough to create over unity lift. Then add friction and you have not got a PMM.

@tasosne another thought. If the ball bearings were neodymium magnets and the guide rails had a copper winding, electricity could be generated by the bearing movement. Sorry for spamming your video but I really like your machine. Im sure the design could be improved much further. I probably wont find the time but Id like to build one incorporating these changes to see how close to 0 energy loss could be achieved.

Some energy is being wasted because of the imperfect materials used. This could only be perpetual if no sound or thermal energy was produced from materials that can not be compressed (i.e. wood which will flex and absorb some of the impact [inelastic]).

Has a curved rail on the up side of the stroke been tried to lessen the back force of the ball against the next ball in sequence which robs momentum? This would bring the ball to center quicker which may add momentum to the cycle. But as we know, this is just me pissing in the wind, ;)
@tasosne
11 жыл бұрын
you are right about the energy losses, but the problem is purelly physics. It's about the rotational kinematics (torque & moment of inertia) and deeper is the 2nd law of thermodynamics that prevent perpetual motion to exist. My intention was to show (to my students) that there aren't such machines...

this one seams as it would work from the balls on the left side rolling down and having more leverage then the right side? No, because if you pause the video, you will see, only two balls at a time will be in a position left of the center axis with more leverage, while you have two balls neutral and two balls trying to get back up where they started -they have to roll back up hill. So with the increased friction a simple wheel would rotate for longer than this.

There is absolutely no problem with the proportions. dried peas would be able to drive a perpetual motion machine, the weight is not a factor. The only problem I can eyeball is an imbalance in the wheel giving it a chance to visibly accelerate. Did you come to the same conclusion or was there a different problem?

Doesn't matter how many balls you use. You still lose energy from friction between the wheel and the axle, and the energy generated by each ball is lesser than the energy required to lift the next ball in sequence.
