Thanks for sharing Ziggy, I've got a couple of cuttings that are rooted and doing very nicely. One is in too much sun and the old growth is purple, with the new growth green. Very pretty! 😀💚🌵

Good morning I wonder how old your plant is.. Bought mine approx 5 years ago and she's tiny, but thankful she got 2 more branches I was very euphoric, might be 15cm high 🤣🍀

Good morning Christina 🙂 Mine was a very large cutting 4 years ago, grows about a foot a year. You might have the monstrose type, I got one of those about the same time and it's still only a few inches high 😬 Mind you, I have taken a few cuttings off it. I'll take a pic of it today and put it up on my community page later 🙂 🌵🌵

Interesting! Does O. subulata eventually become a full-size tree, like some of the Galapagos Opuntias? 🤔😎👍

It's trying to in my cactus house 😬About 14 foot tall so not too big. Brasiliopuntia is much bigger, about 60 foot 😬 Ta for having a look Alan 🙂🙂🌵🌵

I had no idea that the ‘Eve’s Needle descended from deciduous trees! I somehow thought cacti appeared independently & had no connection with trees but were plants that had adapted to the hot desert conditions ( or dry cold highland) Thanks Ziggy!🌵🤔

I've got some more plants that are halfway, proper leaves and spines, but they're not really up to video standard yet. If you look at 17 million year old whale fossils they have little back legs where the flippers are now 😎Cheers Diana 😊😊🌵🌵

I know seals whales etc had walking ancestors but I just assumed wrongly that cacti developed from something other than trees- sorry it just seems retrograde- but I know nothing re the plant world & I shouldn’t assume anything 😀

@@dianarolph1770 Cacti are recent, only 30 million y.o. Probably evolved from shrubby trees in S.America and then spread into N. America. None in the old world 🙂🙂🌵🌵

Thanks Ziggy- I had no idea about cactus evolution- it’s not something I’ve ever thought about! I suppose I just thought smaller plants had evolved according to perhaps the changing conditions but it is by examining vestiges left behind as clues that give the botanists an idea of the antecedents- it is really fascinating!

@@dianarolph1770 I enjoyed looking further into it Diana 🙂 I knew they only occur in the new world but didn't know how recent that was, oysters are older than cacti 😮Apparently there are no fossil cacti but I've yet to confirm that 😁😁🌵🌵
