Gaz has great screen presence, it was a great review. I mean, really. I rarely watch a reviews of something I don't want beyond 5 minutes. Here, it was over 15 minutes before I skipped a bit. The guy got me for over 15 minutes in a review of something I don't need or want, just because he's interesting. And he's got a really good musical angle at things, very practical. Top reviewer I've seen.

For anyone watching this now, Launchpad Pro now DOES have "in key" modes, like the Push (32 of them, actually) ... this was effected by way of a firmware update (in 2016, I think). Makes it better than the Push 1 in all respects, except for the lack of a screen (sample editing on it, etc), really.

Excellent in depth review! Seemed to me like you covered all the bases. Looks like they've really thought this one through, though as a Push user, i'm not impressed with the note mode. There's so much more they could've done with it, and the transposing strikes me as kinda dumb. Pretty much all other functions make perfect use of the available resources. The velocity sensitive "faders" are particularly clever. While ultimately still a "fix" for the lack of real faders and/or knobs, as backpack-fodder i can really see the point of not having pots or faders sticking out. And that's probably the point, they're aiming to make a cheap, light Push that's much easier to toss in a pack and go. For the MIDI on mini jack dongle, i agree. When there's actually room for proper MIDI DINs, it makes no sense. But i'd rather have the dongle than no MIDI at all. And with this there _is_ room, so not good enough in my book. Personally, i think they're about 60% of the way to "replicating" the Push they so desparately wanna steal market shares from. And it's about 60% of the price, so i guess that's all good and well. I don't like the way they've implemented note mode, and i'd really miss the step sequencing. There's ofc quite a few other minor details where the Push is more elaborate, and keeps your head out of the computer more of the time. But if they bring those 2 major points up closer to Push with a software update, then they got a *real hit* on their hands! Untill then i think most people that can afford the Push, will still go that way unless the size/weight means a lot. I know i'll keep dragging my Push along for the ride.

Great review as usual Gaz! Is it possible to control more than one synth using a midi interface like the iConnectivity mio10? Can we also do program changes? @lxrdox

+teekanne15 I think they're at a disadvantage with this because it has no knobs. It would have been cool if they had knobs all around the device, so you could map them as you please.
you can power it by usb alone as well without needing to lug around the power cable. its also a bit smaller than the push so its better for bringing around places

When demonstrating your own pad configuration while using the drum rack, were you actually in "user" mode? It seems that, when otherwise using note mode for a drum rack, it configures automatically to a 16 button block layout. Thanks in advance for any help in the matter. =)

"DIN plugs make a nice positive connection"? You're kidding right? They were and still are, dreadful and were dropped by the audio industry many moons ago for carrying audio due to the poor connectivity offered by the small diameter pins and the fact that they didn't (as standard) latch. God alone knows why a 5 pin connector like a 5 pin DIN was chosen for MIDI which only needs 3 connections. RIP 5-pin DIN, long live the 3.5mm stereo jack.

+Cihan Kenar I was too,but then I relized after messing around, pro is actually better,if u watch novations review,in my opinion I think it put push to shame, when when I got the pro I figured out it has every feature push has almost, the only things I didn't find was the sampling feature where u cut samples strait from push, but the cutting samples is no easier doin it on the push than the computer,to me the Launchpad pro is a lighter more portable and cheaper version of push without taking away its features, one thing I like to add is push, even push 2,doesnt have a stand alone feature(where u save samples in the pro and disconnect from the computer and can still play wats on the Launchpad)yet pro does,so decision is yours but honestly push is really not needed in my opinion

No actually - you can use it as a standalone MIDI controller in a hardware synth only setup - with no computers involved. You just use the MIDI breakout cables to connect to the MIDI in on the synth you want to control. I am getting one for this very purpose! I think this is the best feature of Launchpad Pro, and is what separates it from Push. If you work out of the box, and want a grid based controller, this is the way to go.
