Something I personally find helpful to get to know your characters is to take personality quizzes as them, I have a character named Scorpion (fan character just for fun with my friends.) And I like to take quizzes as her. It really gets you thinking about the way that your character is thinking. -A Random Person on the Internet Who Has Advice For You

I just feel like writing this. :/ Ever since of 2 years ago, I had an "original" character which was more of a fan character, since I created her based off of an existing character (Orochimaru of Naruto). I constantly kept changing her appearance and name. I don't know how many times I've changed her name, so let's call her Tom (aboy'snamelolbutstill...). I didn't actually know who 'Tom' was, but something always told me that she was important, and I couldn't get away from her since she was a, well, "friend" for me, but I didn't know her, yet something inside me knew her. I know I sound stupid, but this 'Tom' was the only friend I had, even though imaginary she was. I couldn't know her, yet I couldn't get away from her. But she was a mere fan character. Then one day, in a class excursion, (I sound stupid again) watching the landscape from the bus, the mountains, the rivers, it suddenly came; her background, who she was. And this girl wasn't a fan character anymore, nope; she now, ah, needless to say, was nothing like the existing character I based 'Tom' off. She wasn't this 'Tom' at all. This thing had evolved from the always-changing 'Tom' to a girl nothing like 'Tom'. This girl's personality, I thought, couldn't be 'Tom's'. This girl's background wasn't 'Tom's'. It was her own, an original character's, not a mere fan character's. And this girl was now nothing like anyone. This girl was herself. She had a name, which could not be 'Tom' anymore. Anymore? Was she ever 'Tom'? So I started getting me head busy on wondering a name for her; a true name. Mikaela, I found that I liked. Now that I knew Mikaela, I knew her story, so I could get onto the world she lived in, her ancestors, her friends, her foes. I could now create me original world, not some fan world. *Mine.* I think I have a problem with the girl's father, who kind of looks very much like the character I based 'Tom' off. But the two are very different, so I don't have anything to worry about? I don't know...
@KK-ex9uc

***** Thank you so much! I'm really, realy glad you enjoyed my story! As for the girl's father, he just looks like Orochimaru at first sight, and that's a problem for me... :/ He's my original character, don't worry, but it's just that his looks are a bit like Orochimaru's...

My style is cute and soft, but my story is rough, tough, and sometimes really violent. The best part of this is the way the story can be developed to seem soft and harmless, but little by little the style starts being ironic with the story basis. And it works. Try making your character as close to your style as you want and then a style closer to fitting your story. Then try and make it combined and see if it makes it more fitting. Or use your style and make it really work with the story.

Alright... How about this one... (no not exactly "comparing scars" so bear with me)...lolz I have minor-motor control issues, and pretty severe nerve damage in my right hand. I am ambidextrous (through a lot of practice) but in writing and art, it's often a matter of both hands to the same level of garbage... So... drawing issues, right? I just start with basic sketches to "get the idea visualized" in some form. At first, it's always rough and vague... I work on color-scheme, and take notes around the "margins" or "peripherals" of these sketches... The notes are usually words that associate well with the character concept. They can be short descriptions and arrows for stuff like ideal accessories or needed details. They can also be single words to keep in mind while "fleshing out" the character concept. I try (not always successfully) to experiment in body type, while I form a better mental picture of how the character should come out, but limit (here's the tough one) the "preliminary" sketches to about a dozen or so... Okay, with nerve damage and bad minor-motors... I tend to toss a bunch of "just practice" sketching aside while I'm at it... But at the end of sketching, I try to keep just under a dozen of the earliest sketches. The rest "go away"... not necessarily garbage-away, just out of the current project's way... away. With some practice focused on the character specifically, I start the next stage(s) adding colors, details, deciding on the specific body type and basic stuff... Height/weight, hair and eye color(s)... skin tone... confirm what I really want in the character's basic image... Usually, I've already started with the gender or identity (etc) in mind, but if not, by this point I make a decision... And another round of sketch-work and coloring... Pretty much I repeat and "refine the style" artistically to best suit the character... repetitions become their own stages (over time and batches of sketchworks) Decide fashion sense (and sensibility or sensitivities) Think about favorite things and activities (insert character into scenes) Work on attitudes, gestures, and sense of humor, anger (or rage), Now, I also keep a folder for each character... Into it, I make sure to organize the preliminary sketching and notes (those first dozen or so I picked)... And I separate the repetition cycles of adding and fleshing... Finally, I like to have a "character sheet" which you might be better able to understand if you looked into a game like AD&D or Cyberpunk, ShadowRun, GURPS, etc... old fashioned RPG's with books and dice... This character sheet is where you describe your character in a clinical sense (not by telling the whole life story) but the numbers and some degree of precise measure of things like dexterity or charisma or strength... You don't have to be specific enough to put numbers down (unless you like a particular system for it)... You can do it like "strong enough to lift X-amount with a moderate strain" so you get a "picture" of the attribute... It helps... This character sheet should (eventually) contain all the stuff that might affect what you show in the art, but isn't "recorded" as part of it... (example?) A character with a sadistic sense of humor would be smirking as he/she watched someone (especially non-friend) suffering... Or may possibly outright guffaw where others might only smile and try not to overly humiliate some stranger. (sadism doesn't always mean enjoys physical pain, but ANY pain)... (while you can't exactly draw "sadist" into a character image, it WILL affect that character's outward demeanor more often than just in a fight or conflict)... So notes like that will be indespensible! They also avoid internal conflict in the story, and you do want to be true to the character(s)... No matter how long it's been since you last employed any particular one in a story line... The bottom line is that you will improve. Everyone does, BUT only with practice. As you draw or sketch and repeat and repeat, you can look back at the earlier work and figure out where your style might need a tweak here and there... It's not that your style doesn't justify the character so much as you haven't worked the character into your style or your style around to complement the character... AND that takes time... time and practice. Don't forget to breathe and relax from time to time... and then keep on keeping on. Artists do art, right? :o)

The way I create a character/ build it up is by giving it a personality first, likes and dislikes, all the basics. After that, I make a Skype account with my friend naming ourselves the character we're making. We then start to roleplay (act) as the character we are given. This makes us build our character's up and make changes to her/his personality and dislikes.

When it comes to avoiding overly perfect characters (a.k.a. the Mary Sue), I think the most important thing is finding a balance. For instance, it's possible for some people to be straight A student, play the piano very well, and has over five scholarships. To balance a character like that and flesh him or her out, one way to make them more human is to give them basic flaws. One example might be jealousy and self-doubt. And how well or how badly they react to stress. Also, one more thing to consider is that mental illness is not the same thing as a character flaw. But rather, mental illness presents the possibility of a certain set of flaws that are common between those with the same condition. A character who has depression or PTSD has a set of issues they go through with their every day life that is different from a neurotypical person. I suspect that sometimes character creators have this tendency to add mental illness into their characters in an attempt to make them appear more interesting, edgy, and unique, when in reality it shouldn't be the focal point of a character to the point where it's like a freakshow. Creating characters with mental illness or developmental disorders are completely fine, but it's very important to approach them like any other character.

I remember mentioning about how I torture a character in my roleplays in another video. I've worked on this character since I was fourteen years old and he originally started as a randomly generated character from what people may think is a cop out website for uncreative people but it can be a useful tool for writers and artists known as Seventh Sanctum. This character was originally a _Kingdom Hearts_ fan character since the description from Seventh Sanctum's generators (Magic Knight generator to be exact) stated he used a key for magic, ect. I took him out of the story and attempted to make my first comic (which was an utter failure, I rushed the process in making a comic and not take my time). This character is known as Fuuya. My friends helped me name him when he was a _Kingdom Hearts_ fan character. His name is Japanese 楓 (fuu) meaning "maple" or 風 (fuu) meaning "wind" combined with 也 (ya) meaning "also", 弥 (ya) meaning "universally" or 哉 (ya), an exclamation. Other combinations of kanji are possible. (Thank goodness it's not _water baby_ . O_O; ) Fuuya had been through a lot. I have shipped him with male characters because I'm an evil fujoshi Goddess that needs to slow her roll. I've also changed him from a keyblade master to a _Kamen Rider_ based warrior and...still no actual story. I've attempted to rectify this and nothing.

When I started to think more of the logic, it seems that our new MC, a.k.a Karu Seikatsu, a.k.a Femdad(tm) had a more interesting life and more connections, as he's a musician.

Here's a tip I have, join character contests. That's how I actually came up with the first character that I've ever loved. I joined a character contest which I lost, I forgot about that character until two months ago. I have improved that character so much that I draw her every day xD

I have a character based on a paint brush his name is Flynn (brand of the paintbrush ) he is like a lil desk buddy to me carrying the paintbrush and cleaning the eraser shavings of drawings and helping me draw , I draw Flynn when I practice poses and faces.

8:37 For my manga, one of the female character was inspired on my mom... But when I gave it to her for read, she was like: " *Gee, this one is really a little bi**#ch**... She is really an awful person, I really hope no one on earth is like her...* " I was so inconfortable... I didn't know what I was supposed to answer 😂

I actually created one of my characters, Juliandra, I've mentioned her before, specifically to be a light in the darkness type character. Particularly to compliment/contrast my main character. She's very positive, upbeat, and kind of old-fashioned. Michael, my main character, is brooding, antisocial, and relatively modern. Juliandra had nothing TRULY bad happen to her, and Michael experienced great trauma. Though they both love reading, and have similar relationship views. I actually came up with them both around the same time, but kind of played off their opposites to keep each other grounded.

I had such an identity crisis over the past weeks because I feel like my art is crap, I have spent about 10 years drawing manga, perfecting art style and charas and stories and all together. but for a long time I got stuck because I really wanted to be as good as my fav artist, but instead of going towards the level of skills she has, I was slowly trying to draw like her. that held me back for years. then I got out of it, started my youtube channel I had worked for all these years and made videos with passion and soul. then yesterday I had a little breakdown... I saw an artist on youtube that was just drawing. no guidelines, little erasing and a lot of character in her art. I tried drawing and couldn't get anything right. instead of feeling inspired I felt like I had wasted my entire life doing something I was never any good at, and felt like it made sense since I had never gotten much recognition for my art like others have. I thought maybe I really am bad at drawing and just don't know it. I layed in bed and started crying and was in a very bad place... and all of a sudden I had a realization. someone else might be better, but I can learn and practice. and that is completely up to me. HELL NO I'm not giving up! so I sat up took my mofo pencil and drew! and for the first time in months, my art had character, emotion, and a distinct style coming right out of MY hand.

I'm so proud of you for being able to bring yourself out of that slump and just create art!! 💖💖💖 It takes courage to do that so feel happy :) One thing to always keep in mind is to never compare yourself to other artists because everyone's art is so different from one another! It's like comparing cake to BBQ ribs! (personally) I think both are yummy, but they're yummy for different reasons! Sure, some recipes need some work, but the food in general is still good! I think of art, skill level, and style the same way: your art and style may still need some work, but there's no point in comparing it to others because you and that artist are different people, with different life experiences that effected your art etc.

Here’s a question, how to create a character that is meant to be dislike or hated but still be captivated or appealing? Mostly for an antagonist, villains, or anti-heroes. An example is the joker in the dark night. He was dark, sinister, and psychotic, yet he was still super captivated by the way he talked he address the other characters and plan things out, to the point he stole the movie. Reason for this is, by hating a character many authors tend to make them too “unlikeable” to the point the reader really doesn’t care or just wants him/her out of the way as soon as possible. In my opinion and preference a good hated character is someone who you know he’s doing wrong, but there still a gray area you feel it’s justified, and in rare cases you pitied them. What do you think?
