I always love watching these old game of any sport...well I grew in this era and they are like little time capsules. So many changes in the sport and life in general. Missing is all the hype and nonstop entertainment that has nothing to do with the game like there is now in so many sports. People went to watch the game not needing to be entertained by anything other than what was on the field or the ice surface. No PA announcers that sound like a combination between an AM radio DJ and Monster Truck rally. People mostly wore their normal clothing not Team Merch. Of course there were no Cell phones then so the only thing anyone ever had with them other a thermos of coffee or tea (maybe with some spirit of their liking in it...maybe a transistor radio with an earpiece to listen to the local broadcast...they bought the CFL program but would usually read that at home or before the game started if they got there early...no tailgate parties for 4 hrs before the game...any average income fan could afford to go at least a couple games a year...hell I paid for my own tickets in Calgary mowing lawns and weeding....maybe not center field but when you're 11 or 12 you don't care. I still remember the excitement of walking out of the concourse to find my seat...and watching the teams come out for the pre-game warm up...man that grass field at McMahon was glorious and beautifully maintained...by far the nicest in the league. I think a seat anywhere in the upper section, at McMahon + program, coke and hotdog and bus-fare cost a total of around $12.00...now a beer cost that. 1:37:59 Scanella having a smoke on the sidelines...well you could smoke in the stands as well...exactly why my mom wouldn't go to games. No constant chyron on the screen so you had to wait until the announcer mentioned the score or a for a commercial break. No music blasting i between whistles...just the sound of one of those goofy plastic bugles. Uniforms were different...not the tight fitting short cut around the shoulder pads...you could actually see the striping on the sleeves, well because they had sleeves then...no alternate uniforms just to sell more merch and most teams kept their traditional styling. There will always be an argument about which era of Uniforms for each team were the nicest, but for me the 70's were the nicest, simple ,classic uni's. Calgary's classic Red and White didn't need "improving" do'nt what it is about modern sports teams that want to add black to their schemes that classically don't have black. Uniforms mostly stayed within their classic design. The CFL seemed to think that was not entertaining enough and of course wasn't earning them enough money. Every CFL team in the 70's had had beautiful simple classic Uniforms and Helmets. I guess BC changed from their Black Home Uni's because their were already two other teams with home Black. I loved the Alouette's Green with Red and white...and their away Whites of that era were really nice...have to admit I didnt like the ugly Blue with red and white and the shoulder stripes. Argos early 70's were really nice as were Sask simply Green and white and helmet logo. I dont know, now the uni's are all over designed...god know who gets paid for that. And FFS no idiotic over the top celebrations after simply making a good football play...like just making a catch or hit...no jumbo-tron. No mic'ed refs to give an explanation about the call...either you needed know the rules...I remember my dad would bring a CFL rule book with him...to look up the ruling and if it was correct... if watching on TV the commentators would likely discuss the call. When I was 10 years old my dad was probably making $15,000/year gross and he could still afford to take home and some of my friends to a game...I remember most the fathers on our block would often trade off taking a bunch of us to the games and then go for burger and Root Beer at A&W Drive-In after the game. I know everything is relative but...many things were more accessible financially to families...going to a CFL game didn't bust the monthly budget and wasn't just a once in a year thing. I went almost every home game when i was kid, even though my parents never had season tickets. I also remember as a kid we were allowed to run on to the field after final gun and get autographs from the players who would stay around for a good length of time signing programs and photos...Well just some thoughts...and thanks for posting these games.....oh and no two-point conversion!

wow so long ago! i had just turned 8yrs old the first of that month and was just started to become aware of sports on tv ..would finally get into in 83 the Lions /Argos Grey Cup and became a Lions fan that year (a real talented heartbreak team if there ever was in the 1980s CFL ..looking back 78 was a kind transition yr the 70s Montreal(with the Habs and Al's) was truly the city of champions..78 would see the start of the Eskimos dynasty and as that dynasty ended the start of the Oilers hockey dynasty that mad Edmonton the city of Champions in the 80's

The play where David Boone knocked Joe Barnes out of the game (around the 1 hour 42 minute mark) would result in a 15-yard penalty and maybe disqualification and suspension today, as well as a brawl at the bench. In 1978, it was considered to be part of the game. It's also worth noting how normal the fans look--not the face-painting, beer-guzzling yahoos of the last 20 years or so.

in all honesty, Edmonton did Montreal a favor with that shot. Barnes, as with every other playoff game he played save for one miracle quarter in 1983, absolutely sucked in the playoffs. Wade was clutch and had he started, Edmonton's dynasty would have been 4 in a row.

You cut off the player introductions where the PA announcer clowned the Eskimos with "the weather is above freezing for today's game so there will be NO excuses!"
