This workshop was geared toward the beekeeper who has yet to begin to raise their own queens or queens for others, for whatever reason. If you are experienced in queen rearing, there may be little new content.
We addressed some common hurdles, such as:
-Grafting is too difficult; I can't see and pick up small larvae
-I need more bees for a cell builder
-I don't need 50 queens for myself
-I don't know how to go about raising queens
-I couldn't possibly raise quality queens like I can buy at the store
We concentrated on:
-When and why do the bees make new queens
-The optimal conditions under which the bees make new queens
-The importance and composition of the cell builder
-Various ways you can construct a cell builder
-Discussion of various methods of getting your queen cells started in the builder; Grafting (the "Doolittle" method), Nicot/Jenter, OTS, Swarm Cells, Walkway Splits, Cell Punching, and The Hopkins Method.
