Klaas Bolt's (* March 6 1927 - † April 4 1990) father was a teacher as well as choir conductor and church organist. Klaas Bolt was therefore predestined for a job in education (he attended the training college for a short time), but he also came into contact with music at an early age. He became a student of Johan van Meurs, on the Arp Schnitger organ in the Der Aa church in Groningen. In 1946 he became organist of the Bartholomeüskerk in Noordlaren and assistant organist of the Martinikerk in Groningen. Then he studied at the Conservatory in Utrecht, where his exceptional gift for improvisation became apparent.
In 1952 he was appointed as the organist of the world-famous Christiaan Müller organ in the Grote or Saint Bavokerk in Haarlem, where he accompanied the church services. He 'shared' this instrument with the city organists Piet Kee and Albert de Klerk. He also took additional lessons in improvisation with Cor Kee, Piet Kee's father. He was the winner of the Haarlem International Organ Improvisation Competition, both in 1956 and in 1957.
In addition to his permanent appointment in Haarlem, Klaas Bolt also often performed as a concert organist in the Netherlands and abroad and was very active as a teacher - at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He also gave improvisation courses in the United States.
Klaas Bolt was not only an organist, but even more a church musician with special attention for protestant congregational singing and for this reason he founded a church choir. It was his view that the organ should be guided by both the congregational singing and the choir, instead of the organ being guided by the singing. That is why he strongly opposed the musicologically motivated tendency among conductors and organists to choose high tempi.
As an organist, he had great knowledge of the construction and history of the instrument. He has acted as a consultant on organ restoration and organ rebuilding projects around the country about 200 times. The last instrument for which he supervised the restoration was the Schnitger organ in the Groninger Der Aa church on which he had learned the trade.
Bolt composed a limited number of compositions, mainly variation works. Transcriptions of some recorded organ improvisations appeared in print posthumously.
