At the risk of sounding facetious, tomay-to, tomah-to…I thought I heard everything when this “First Take” channel decided that the word performance defined just moving around but not actually singing, dancing, playing an instrument or anything of the kind. We all know that even the most experienced musicians don’t get it perfectly in one take. Some musicians need more takes than others. I believe when you played Avril Lavigne’s pitch corrected vocal, you proved that pitch correction DOES NOT equal pitch perfection. Like anything else in modern technology, nothing is perfect. 10:14 BANG ON. It's really hard to nail two notes cleanly on pitch PERFECTLY with no intro or slide. These people should be quickly placed in front of a judge with questions like "Isn't it true that you claimed the vocals were not edited yet you clearly edited them with eq, compression and worst of all.... autotune or some method of pitch correction?" that's what I'd like to see. Liars prosecuted!

I saw LiSA in the thumbnail and was scared (she's one of my favorite vocalists!), but this "First Take" channel... I knew those were not "real" first takes. Great video, I had no idea about that channel trailer. I also assumed only the video "performance" was in one take haha, it's pretty deceitful. I'd be super interested in a video on LiSA, if there are suspicions she uses live pitch correction too.

The LiSa Guerenge clip has at least some tuned vocals from what I can hear, I don't think you want him to take a look at that one because if I can hear it with my naked ear it won't be pretty. But since he had to mute the small part in the intro, I don't see it possible for him to do a clip on Gurenge for example. I do think she is a good vocalist, but the problem is that the Japanese industry love tuning vocals just like the Western music industry does so there is no way they allow that to go out without it being "perfect".

I've watched the First Take videos of LiSA singing GURENGE (the one in the intro clip), and BABYMETAL singing MONOCHROME many, many times, and they seem legit to me. Wish you might take a look at those. I know from attending live peformances that SU-METAL can really sing on pitch with zero vibrato. ATARASHII GAKKO NO LEADERS are a dance vocal group, so I would have lower expectations for how they are presented. But I expect the first sounds were captured by an overhead boom mic, rather than the individual mics we see in from of SUZUKA and the others.

This was my thought exactly. I watched mostly the Japanese artists on first take and haven't really noticed this, Especially when Lisa did Homura and you can hear her warbling a little as she fights back those tears. I guess I don't pay a ton of attention in the moment and I don't have the software which visualizes it makes it easy to spot. I know it's incredibly common in Western media, but I don't know if East Asia has the same pitch correction culture that we are unfortunately saddled with.

I have certainly heard autotune or at least something weird in the Gurenge clip before with my naked ears albeit only in a small portion, so I assume everything has been tuned on that one. I have a feeling the Babymetal one was as well, but I only have heard that once of twice and it has been a while. Also, I own a LOT of Japanese albums (a couple 100) most of them in rock/metal and most of them have a LOT of vocal production on them without question including pitch correction. I think it's pretty rampant over there, at least as bad as in the West, possibly because they are really used to the sound of it because of all the anime intros (just my speculation) and a lot of the Idol groups which tend to be autotuned.

The voice actor they used for the trailer sounds like hes trying to impersonate the “SodoSopa” voice from South Park. Unbelievably cringe especially since its all fake too lmao

Great analysis! Unfortunately in this day and age I’m really not surprised that a KZitem channel would try to pass off performances as a live when they are not. But I am very surprised at how bold the channel is with their intro trailer in pointing out how music today is ‘filtered’, and then implying they are opposed to this while intentionally doing the exact same thing to fool people! I’m glad Fil has called them out on it!

Thanks for staying on this issue, Fil. The industry has very little incentive to change if nobody calls out these fraudulent practices.

13:52 that run landed perfectly over the lines in a very fast timeframe. PERFECT PITCH. That kind of thing just doesn't happen w/o autotune. ONE of those notes will be slightly off or two. Mostly, the first and last notes can be really close but not all four. That one almost had the Cher effect.

How could people hear this stuff and exclaim NO AUTOTUNE!!! Just because it’s not extreme like Pittbull does not mean it’s natural. Kinda crazy

The channel NEVER PROMISED that the singers were human beings. Obviously, they are incredibly lifelike robots who can sing in such precise ways. Yeah, that’s the ticket! 😂

I saw Avril Lavigne in a tiny venue decades ago, and Wembley Arena. The great thing was, her vocals were all the better for the “mistakes”, on both occasions….That was the point of seeing live gigs…What you heard, was a one off….I don’t like “perfection” in vocals, I want to hear the person, not a damn algorithm….Keep up the good work Fil….

People who think they can critique a singer publicly without recognizing there is at a minimim heavy processing make me sad. Avril's voice is very robotic in this clip and it's quite clear. Maybe this is a form of experiment to see what they can get away with for future reference ?

I'm so glad I grew up in the times when a band would go off to a remote house, which usually turned out to be haunted & just concentrated on making great music. Meanwhile 50 years later many of these great bands are still touring & selling out stadiums.
