I bought this game when it released and played it through the Single Player campaigns for each class. I would have sworn that the Warrior had a Repair ability... I played the Warrior first, then the Wizard and finally the Conjurer. I never got into the multiplayer aspects of it but for a single player game it was excellent. It didn't have the relentless replayability that Diablo II did but what it had, it did really well. The games humor is also something that sticks with me to this day. My wife and i will still occasionally toss out one of the opening lines from the intro video of the game, when Jack's wife tells him that "chicken's On the Gri-ill... Do You want Bacon?" Good impressions like that stick with you.

I had read a bunch of stuff about Nox and seen ads for it in PC Gamer leading up to it's release and as a big fan of the C&C franchise was excited to see what Westwood would do with a fantasy setting not knowing about their D&D games and other fantasy stuff at the time. Underworld being one of the first first person games on pc to use a real full 3d engine and in early 1992 is insane, but also ultima 7 was mindblowing, dropping a month after underworld and supplied a this huge openworld game with huge 2 part story, the ability to move every object in the game and do all kinds of everyday thing. While the combat in the ultima series was never the best the world's in ultima 4-7 especially 6 and 7 given the time they came out is really amazing.

There is no concept art or anything of the like from the Hyperion era of Nox's development. Some Heuristic Park artists took a look at some 1998 screenshots and renders I linked to them, and said it was too long ago to say for sure which assets were from pre-HP, which were HP, and which were from Westwood. AI slop is a convenient means of filling the gaps of Nox's 95-97 period, which is why I don't use them from the 1998 era onwards. No idea how Bing image creator is somehow treating artists as dirt, as you put it.
@ksenolog
11 ай бұрын
@@MrEdders123 Or you could just not fill that gap if there is no proper art. It isn't a requirement. By adding generated artwork you devalue your video, at least in my eyes. And you are one of rare youtube channels I was looking forward to every upload from, with notification turned on. Especially Nox one, cause it's one of my favorites. Adding for sake of adding is not the best idea in my book. I'd say it's the worst one. Putting anything else instead, or nothing at all, would be an improvement. Every image generator treats artists as dirt. Whole concept built on misused artwork of millions of artists without their permission. Old and new alike. It's nothing but most abhorrent use of such technology. Nothing good is gained from it, outside hollow instant gratification. I understand that your intention was just to fill the gap and nothing more, but I can't separate usage of generated image from general normalization of devaluing hard works of people for sake of own convenience. And in a video which talks in detail about history of how something was made, it's borderline hypocritical to use generated images. I can't speak for everyone obviously, everything above based on my perspective. But as someone who works in such field for past decade it's just disappointing to see, and I will rather just stop being near anything which involve generated images. I just really don't want this channel to go down the road of using generated images. Hence the comment. Either way majority won't care. Either I watch or not won't matter to you. So all I can do is to ask. If not, well, it's your channel.

The only thing I disliked a little was the floaty walking. Nox trounced diablo in gameplay and mechanics. It was fast paced and offered puzzles not only with the environment but with the enemies in them. The lighting system and traps in the game would punish you for being careless and clumsy but not in a way that was unfair. And the PVP didn't rely on a gear grind or trying to exploit stats to make a broken build. Story was fun and the art style of the game always inspired the imagination. I find it a bit sad the game did not do so well. Even games like Diablo 3 and 4 have not been able to capture the fun I had in this game.

Another game I'd love to see is Might and Magic 6! Mandate of heaven is the first 3d open world rpg and one that uses a first person view that I know of and while not gamebreaking in story or maybe even graphics, the use of graphics music make for a beautiful game. The world has plenty of secrets to find great outdoor areas to fight in, and well made dungeons with good traps and some complex layouts. The game has 100s of hours of fun

Nox has been on my "I'd like to play it some day" list for a long time and this vid and learning about opennox led to an install and some playing. Part of the reason I wanted to play it is because of it's comparison to Diablo but the silly premise has kept it lower on my list than it probably should have been. I can honestly say that out of all the games that aped Diablo in the late 90's to early 2000's this isn't one of them. It's unique and engaging in a way only some games of it's era really achieved.

I used to go into online matches as a warrior, take my pants off so I was only wearing tighty-whiteys (in game, it needs mentioning), and charge-attack through closed doors. When I'd hit someone and kill them I'd shout in game "The Pantsless Wonder strikes again!" I love Nox.
