I was under the impression that the transfer case and transmission are sealed independently from each other and shouldn't mix fluids (not so much for fluid compatibility, they use the same fluid, but for keeping levels proper.). It looks like you had a bunch of fluid come out when you separated the trans and transfer case, may want to look at getting a tailshaft seal for the 4l80e.
@LawrenceTolman
3 жыл бұрын
the gasket between the transfer case and transmission is what makes the seal on this style of 4wd truck. The transfer case has a front seal which keeps transmission fluid out of it, and the large six bolt flange gasket seals the trans fluid inside of it. its normal to lose a little fluid when you separate the two
@brokeatvguy6294
10 ай бұрын
Yeah lawrence is right, there will be some fluid that comes out when you unbolt the two from eachother and another thing about the transfer case and trans fluid is that the transfer case can work with regular trans fluid but id much rather have a heavy duty oil in especially if its the chain driven 241

So, if you have a good 246 and want to run a solid axle there is slip yoke eliminator for the front output that slides into the output and is held in place by tack welds, I had to weld mine completely due to the tack breaking, yes you can still service the seals with the shaft welded in. Tahoverlanding can help with that.

Have to pull the ATC fuse so I can drive it without binding. I suspect the shift motor is bad as I hear it buzzing quite loudly twice then stops trying to disengage and sets the service light. I did notice when I used a crescent wrench on the shaft (2 flats) it took quite a bit of effort to shift manually. Is this normal for the 246? And do you think I am correct about the shift motor being bad? Have a aftermarket replacement motor on order now. Thanks again

A cummins swap would be fun, but we'll see where this one goes. Thats a solid drivetrain you outlined though. Its shifted similarly to the NP246, but it has no low range, and cant be selected manually.

in theory, you could just swap to a manual shift transfer case and leave your stock front diff, it would just be turning all the time when driving, but there will be no power flowing through the front driveshaft. Not sure what it would take to swap to a push button shift transfer case however, that would take some different wiring and a control module

They have the sensors in the exact same place as the ones you swapped are. But even if you were to delete the module by removing the 4wd fuse, how would it work going from 3 speed sensors to 1 speed sensor, I'd the ecm/tcm is expecting to see 3 signals how does it function off just 1, & how would you tap it into the engine harness??
@maassauto

I'm curious if you considered using the NP243 t-case which was also an option in 96-99 OBS trucks. It's electronically actuated but without the failure prone "auto 4x4" of the NP246. You could skip having to mount the shifter on the floor allowing use of the Escalade console. Obviously too late for your truck but I thought your viewers might want to know a second option.

It could be done, but the issue would be the wiring and TCCM because they're different between the 246 and 243 from what I read.

Im trying to to 6.0L swap my 2001 dodge ram 1500 4x4 but i need a strong transfer case that's a driver side drop for the dodge and will bolt up to a chevy transmission and it needs to be a manual shift like the factory one.

Good afternoon friend, I have a 95 blazer, I want to activate the 4 * 4 without actuators, it has 2 in the transfer, I can turn it with my hand, both to activate the 4 * 4, it is a question, please help me, I am from Mexico . I like to go fishing and I bought a blazer truck and I don't have money to fix so many actuators please just tell me if I can remove the electric actuators and turn them to fit 4*4

I loved the presentation. Too bad you didn’t finish cleaning the crap off with a wire brush. Also when standing and talking holing the camera, could you not sway back and forth. It’s annoying. You’re a great guy and I have enjoyed your work and explanations over the years on power nation.

This was a great video to watch you have given me the idea to do this with my 98 Chevy k2500 which has a push button 4-wheel drive switch I am looking to convert it over to a manual shift lever on the floor like you have done 99 Suburban

I’m wondering if this would work on my 2007 Saab 9-7x 5.3 . I just did the DOD delete ( cam, lifters, springs, and long tube headers ) . I would love to be able to spin the back tires.

i think the transfer case in the 9-7x and trailblazer SS is a different style from the 246 I pulled out. In theory, yes, you could install a truck style selectable transfer case, but I'm not sure on the specifics

I'm thinking about a Suburban or Tahoe half ton 4x4. Engine I want to install is a 454. I want it to be all wheel drive like you did with that red 1500. Would the transfer case you used on that red 1500 work for what I want to do?

yeah, the NV149 is a great case, but a little hard to find. It will work with either a 4L60 or 4l80e trans, you just need to get the correct input shaft if you switch to a 4L80e (which I would do, if you were making an AWD big block truck)

Just did this conversion and now I have a "service 4wd light" on the dash. Any input on how to remove it properly? 1999 K2500 w/6.5 Turbo, 4l80e, NP241 from a 1998 1500 pickup.

Did you have any concerns that you were putting in a bad/malfunctioning transfer case? Seems like some level of checking/inspection would be in order? Excellent video!

I guess there's always that concern, but luckily it functions like it should.

Enjoy your channel. Working on the same tc swap. What does it take to remove the floor shifter knob? Also, did you find a solution for the shifter lights? Thanks
@LawrenceTolman

the knob just pulls up and off if I remember correctly, but its really on there. As far as the 4wd light indicator on the floor coming on, I havent messed with it

If you ever have to do this again next time try and jack the transmission up a little higher and rotate the transfer case clockwise. No need to remove rear crossmember. But whatever gets it done
@LawrenceTolman
3 жыл бұрын
I did try that, it hit the floor before it was able to move back far enough to disengage from the transmission. the 241 was a slimmer design and was able to come in and out no problem...
