The block shape is one of the most common attacking actions in the NRL, designed to isolate a specific defender in the line and force them into a decision under pressure.
Every club uses block shapes in their attacking systems but the better ones are those who stay ahead of the curve by adding little layers or variations to the traditional setup.
By conditioning defenders to react when presented with a certain look, attacking teams play a game of deception as they try to predict and expose defensive decisions on the other side of the ball.
The reverse block and fake block variations are two recent and relevant examples from the 2024 NRL regular season.
