Great tutorial! Some questions: When you do correlation with the sine wave, what is the y-axis of the output graph? How does it related to the amplitude of the sine wave and the input wave? Say my input has range -1,1, does the sine wave have to be -1,1 as well? What would be the max value of y-axis in the output?

Hi, thank you for the comment. The Y-axis of the FFT shows the RMS level of the analyzed signal. Looking at a single frequency sine signal, a +/-1 V amplitude would result into a 0.707 V or -3 dBV level indication on the FFT. The RMS level is calculated over the complete acquisition time of the FFT.

Brilliant, I finally understand the parameters used to calculate and display FFTs because you explained it through practical examples rather than difficult mathematics. Thank you.

Hi, I have an XL2 with the Advanced Acoustics pack. I need to do FFT Analysis accross the full frequency spectrum, but at the moment I can only measure from 484Hz up to 20KHz. I need to be able to measure lower, down to around 60Hz. Is this possible please? I can't work out how to do it. Thanks.

Hello Tommy, the XL2 with the Extended Acoustic Pack allows you to use the Zoom-FFT with selectable frequency ranges and resolution up to 0.4 Hz in the range of 5 Hz to 20 kHz. However, due to the finitely many number of points to display, you can not choose a high-resolution display and a full frequency bandwidth at the same time. Best regards, NTi Audio

Thanks for the great lecture..Please; if I have a discrete random signal; is it the same manner performing the FFT analysis?

Dear Houfar Khamis, the FFT analysis is indeed well suited for discrete random (i.e digitized noise) signals.

@@NTiAudio thanks Is it meaningful if i sum up fft for the signal and fft of its symmetric then select some components, for better reconstruction of our signal?
