The Marquesas with their main island Nuku Hiva are remote in the South Pacific. Like Hawaii, Nuku Hiva is of volcanic origin. The island became famous not only because of its scenic beauty, but also because Herman Melville, American writer and later author of Moby Dick, docked here in 1842 and fled into the hinterland after deserting as a sailor from a whaling ship.
From Taiohae we cross the island on a breathtakingly beautiful, winding route and, in addition to various viewpoints, visit archaeological sites such as Paeke in the Taipivai Valley, Kamuihei and, as a final highlight, the Bay of Hatihe'u.
