Thank you. I am enjoying the expansion of the nursery. I managed to land a couple of wholesale customers with a third client in the works.

Yes the local sales are very good because Puna is having a growth surge, 40% population increase since 2000. Everyone is planting food forests. I managed to get a couple of contracts with mainland growers that want tropical plant starts too. This was supposed to be retirement but it looks like I am back in business again. Me and my big ideas.

Sadly our lives require chasing after the All Might Dollar. I am blessed that I can do it with something I love.

Good idea Bill. The old cypress is quite costly these days. Best wishes Bob.

I used to find it when farmers were paying property taxes on old structures that contained the wood. My deal was always to tear down the structures and clean up the mess. I would pay nothing for the wood because the farmer got the building off the tax roll. One time in Illinois I took down a barn that had broad ax hand hewn beams. They turn out to be American Chestnut that died out a century ago. In California I used to get paid for dismantling old redwood structures, then charge to haul the wood to my house. Price is all about negotiation and creativity. Chances are most of those cypress silos are gone these days. I must be showing my age. Cal redwood is still a winner though because folks in affluent communities don't like old silvered fences and decks.

Love when you do.videos on these topics. Maybe an old hose around the edges? I appreciate your willingness to use concrete and steel. Whatever the environmental impact, they are highly durable/reusable.

Thanks for the feed back. When I place my flats on the table I run them over the edges so when the tables are full there is no danger from the edge. Concerns are mostly at the corners, hence the tennis balls. When we calculate environmental impacts of materials an open mind is a basic requirement. Since we currently live and a world built mostly of steel, concrete, glass and lumber changing all of that to something more organic isn't going to happen anytime soon. Iron is 8% of the earth crust and 99% of it's core. It is one of the top four most common materials on the planet. When Iron decomposes to iron oxide it is still iron and returns back to the crust where it came with no net loss. Of course mining and smelting are a messy business but I expect these tables to out last me so my son will probably put them on craigslist after my funeral. Wood or bamboo are not suitable alternatives in Hawaiian conditions. Back on the Mainland I always used recycled lumber but we waste so much lumber there that it was the logical alternative. When the tables rotted I would just recycle more used lumber and build again. In Hawaii some one built their house out of any used lumber that the termites didn't eat. Aloha, Bill

Question! Could PVC pipe be used instead of metal in this structure? thanks!
@GreenGardenGuy1
3 жыл бұрын
PVC is a flexible material, nursery stock is heavy. To do this you would have to beef up the support system or the table would sag. Probably wouldn't get much savings because increased support materials.

true its a fast process, unlike tying a bunch of bamboo together.. which i imagine would just compost in the air anyway lol

I have started growing a few bamboo varieties for temporary structures here but for the long term you have to keep the stuff dry. Some guys use shipping pallets as a temporary table. The plastic pallets last for ages if you can get them cheap or free.

I always noticed that plant nurseries have that black cloth on the floor. What is the purpose of it?
@GreenGardenGuy1
6 жыл бұрын
It is woven weed block. The main purpose is to keep weeds from growing in the nursery. We sometimes use gravel too but gravel will grow weeds. It also makes a nice clean surface without mud when the ground is wet.
