This week we’re exploring the beautiful, amazing and untouched Nusa Penida!
In the last episode we caught the ferry from Bali and went straight to Atuh Beach on the east coast of the island where we got to watch a beautiful sunrise which lit up the dramatic coastline.
About 5km south of Atuh Beach is Suwehan Beach. To get down to the beach you clamber down approximately 300 really high steps to a secluded white sand beach surrounded by 150 metre high cliffs. We were lucky enough to have the beach all to ourselves!
After we left Suwehan the plan was to visit some natural pools on the south coast. Unfortunately though we discovered that access to these pools was only by motorbike! So we carried on to the next spot, Broken Beach.
When we arrived at Broken Beach I realised that I’d put the wrong GPS coordinates in and we drove straight past Kelingking Beach. Thankfully though it was a good spot to park up for the night and watch the sunset. The following morning as we were walking down to get some footage of Broken Beach we were joined by a group of Manta Rays swimming around just below us! If only we could of jumped in for a swim with them!
Now, backtracking 10km to Kelingking Beach! The view down to the white sand beach with turquoise water surrounded by huge cliffs from the top is just breathtaking! It’s amazing that the locals have managed to build a path into the face of the cliff going down to the beach as it is so steep! There’s some sticks used as a balustrade which certainly give you a false sense of security. Each one I held onto I gave it a bit of a wriggle first to see how secure it was. Definitely not a walk to do if you’re afraid of heights!
The climb down was 100% worth it as you’re rewarded with crystal clear water at the bottom to have a dip in. We ended up hanging out down there for awhile, possibly just procrastinating the sweaty climb back up to the car!
Next up is Crystal Bay on the West coast. We’d heard the snorkelling here was really good and it certainly didn’t disappoint!
The following morning a group of people working for a surf brand pulled into the bay on their boat for a photoshoot and asked to use the Troopy and surf board as part of it. Not exactly how we planned to spend the morning though we were happy to lend them some props for the shoot.
After the photoshoot was wrapped up, it was time to get in the water. It was really good to see how healthy the coral is here!
In 2010 the Nusa Penida Marine Protected Area was established by the Coral Triangle Centre, with Crystal Bay falling under the “Marine Tourism Zone” category. This means that all fishing and extractive activities are banned and the area is only to be used by divers and snorkelers.
Next week we head back to Bali and have a visitor!
Thanks for watching! We’d love to hear suggestions of places to visit so feel free to leave us a comment below!
