Great video series! Thank you for posting it. I've got a Getrag 360 in my W250, but still fun and educational to watch a video about any type of gearbox renewal. I do like knowing when parts are worn too much. It would be helpful if you had some parts that were worn excessively just to understand what's "really bad".

We do have a bunch of "really bad" parts for different things that we will post on our website eventually, but nothing for the G360 yet. We do have that transmission for videos but that will probably be several months out. You can always send us pictures of what we have, and we can share some of new parts in the meantime!

Good video sir. I have a NV4500 out my 87 silverado I considering rebuilding. It was just getting a little grumpy about the hard shifts. Hopefully get a little time and get it tore down for inspection. Again...good video. I appreciate your time and effort to make the video. Hope you had a Merry Christmas and are looking forward to a great new year.

EXCELLENT VIDEO SERIES, thanks for sharing your knowledge! Purchased the TM1003, very helpful and in depth manual. Would like to have seen a more worn transmission to provide a better comparison of good vs. bad.

What do you wash your parts with chemical wise? I imagine the carbon fiber synchros are pretty picky.
@TorqueKingTV
Жыл бұрын
We have never reused synchros professionally (although Chis did in his personal transmission as part of this video series), but I suppose they could be cleaned like many porous materials. Soak overnight in a light solvent or mild soapy water, then rinse and let air dry; an oven on low temps can help speed this up. Then soak overnight in the intended lubricant (MT85 for the 4500). The biggest concern is not dissolving the adhesive that attached fiber material to brass, which is usually compatible with most lighter solvents. The fiber itself is very resilient but just porous. For general parts cleaning we use a heated parts washer cabinet and Temco powdered detergent, supplemented occasionally with Kirkland powdered laundry detergent and Oxy Clean. We do have a solvent tank but it only gets used after parts get rinsed in the cabinet but still have some stuck on gunk. Those select parts get a quick scrub then head back to the cabinet. We have found mixed results with various dishwasher detergents although that can also be used. I believe Chris washed all his syncros in the cabinet and then rinsed them really good with spray parts cleaner... A general rule is all parts should get a final hand rinse with something (WD40, clean water, spray cleaner) to rinse off detergent or solvent residue before use.

@@TorqueKingTV thank for the details and info, my 4500 rebuild is pretty filthy so a major cleaning is in order.

Thanks for the videos. Very informative. My major gripe for this tranny was the large gap from 3rd to 4th. I'm just curious, but did y'all ever give any thought as how too shorten that? Would 3rd have to be taller or shorter? It would be very interesting to see if 3rd could be machined in such a way as to shorten that gap. Thanks again.

How to shorten that gap: swap in a NV5600 or a G56. Or just drive like a man and run 3rd gear out to 35 mph. Roaring Diesel engines gives all the Karen’s something to talk about. 😊

Great videos. My 3rd gear has been grinding unless I go into it super slow. I used an aftermarket 5th gear nut retainer with the prongs that come out and lock into the 5th gear locknut. If 5th heat backed out again would that cause 3rd gear to grind on a 195,000 mile original nv4500?
@TorqueKingTV

3rd gear syncro is the most common to fail because it is generally the most used. 5th backing off shouldn't cause issues with any other gears. 5th usually backs off because the gear itself wears into the shaft and then the nut is no longer tight and unscrews. That pronged nut and sleeve will fix the issue of the nut itself backing off, however they don't prevent the gear from wearing into the shaft. The gear will then wobble slightly and the misalignment will brake teeth off your countershaft 5th gear. We have pictures of this somewhere and its pretty interesting carnage. That type of failure is not immediate. Usually the nut backed off a couple times before the pronged nut has been installed. We have an article about 5th gear failures here torqueking.com/nv4500-5th-gear-failures-and-solutions/ With 195k original, it is time to rebuild it. NV4500 usually gets 150k between major service, some only made it to 80k while others make it to 300k. Most replacement gears and shafts are now imported, so if you can replace the consumables but retain most original USA made major components you are definitely headed in the right direction.

I have a 2 wheel drive nv4500 that lost fifth gear. It was shifting hard out of 5th prior to that. I took the tail housing off and all looks good. Is it the shaft the fifth gear shifter inside the case that goes into the 5th gear shift fork that is binding? Can that be replaced with out disassembling the whole transmission?
@TorqueKingTV
2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes you are able to replace the 5th gear fork and rail just by removing the top cover assembly. It could be the pin that holds the shift lug sheared off, but it could also be excessive wear in either the top cover or the main housing causing the shift rails to bind. Unfortunately it cant be 100% diagnosed until you get in there. Also check the 5th gear syncro struts to make sure they aren't wedged in there.

@@TorqueKingTVI just tore into my NV4500, was also sticking in 5th, I found the shift rail in the housing is binding at the front. Is there a repair for this? Can it be machined and a sleeve pressed in?

@@preachers4135 It might be money ahead to just buy a new aftermarket main case, rather than pay probably at least as much for a machine shop to do and probably still not get the hole concentric.
