@@paul1979uk2000 In certain regards, sure, but this VRAM situation is a great example. Back with the PS3/360 one could even get a prior generation 7900 GTX and be well ahead of the consoles in terms of absolute memory bandwidth and rasterisation power. Now it’s this messy situation where one could even buy an upper mid-tier card from the prior generation and one would be lucky if VRAM isn’t a bottle neck. The current consoles can do the ray tracing and handle the textures while someone can spend more on the PC side and even get an upper mid range card, only to find themselves somewhat beat in some random department by a much cheaper home console. So back then, one could get a midrange GPU from the previous cycle and still be well ahead of the consoles on all fronts. This even remained true with the PS4/Xbox One era where even budget gaming laptops had better grunt just for a slightly higher cost. That’s just no longer possible. Part of it is likely down to consoles themselves using a very efficient PC style architecture now, but the other parts are down to what people have been mentioning about PC hardware manufacturers.

You may also optimize the settings so it is not really a problem. You can easily sell an RTX 4060 for $200-$250 in the next 2 years while an RTX 3060 12GB would look old by that time. Consider the benefits not what's the numbers on the specs because it has been proven that although it has lesser cuda cores and frame buffer it still outperforms 3060 in most cases. Also you may want to puke on AMD's saturation. NVIDIA Vibrance Settings gives the game a true look and generational leap. DLAA and DLSS in 1440p works like magic. Don't listen to nitwits trying to justify performance by spec numbers. It doesn't even matter in almost all of the games.

The fact is the 4060 has lower bandwidth with a smaller bus and you have to compare it with a 2070 to make it favorable. It's a 1080p card at Best in today's games. In one year this card is not going to be a good card for 1080p. Frame generation is hardly in any titles, negatively impacts your input lag, and it's only really good for lowering persistence. That's fine and all, but we need to stop framing this as if it's a value. It really isn't. It is neck-and-neck with the 3060 t.i. in raster, but that card had more RAM and a larger data bus. The card got beat by an arc A750 doing RT in control. Can't call it a value if it can't even keep up with a competitors first generation card in one of the titles that Nvidia developed wth their own proprietary RT technology. Control was the first "good" RT game and 4060 loses to an A750? Yikes. How does it do in the path traced Minecraft or Quaker RTX? Those two essential RT titles are memory Hogs, so I highly doubt 4060 runs them that well. If you're going to say that it's got value for RT but you only show it losing, and winning in one Nvidia cherry-picked title, it shows it's not a value product at all, especially if future games are what you're looking for.

There's no doubt that RT overdrive in cyberpunk is impressive, and the 4060 runs it decently, especially compared to AMD, but I've already played cyberpunk, and I'm not likely to put that many more hours into it other than a few for the DLC. Then I'm left wondering if this card will even be capable of running future path traced games with it's memory buffer already being right at the tipping point with modern releases, and the notable memory cost of both ray tracing, and frame generation. I just can't see ever choosing this over a much more powerful used card at the same price like a 3070, or a much cheaper card if you are just looking for something that can play modern games at playable frame rates at 1080p like a 6600.

@@mstewart248 Fair enough, but I'd argue that RT was basically vaporware at the launch of the 20 series, making the huge performance gains much less compelling. That said, it all still feels like sort of a nothing burger because there are only a few games where ray tracing is actually a feature I'd turn on because it is still such a huge performance hit for the visual uplift, and the 30 series is still almost as good at ray tracing. DLSS3 is cool, but is also limited to just a couple dozen games, and seems pretty situational, though I'd be lying if I said I wasn't curious to try it in person. Therefore other reviewers concentrating on the core rasterisation performance have the better way of giving a consumer a better understanding of what value the card holds in 99% of all games. Picking only games that utilise the technology (and given that multiple high budget often wanted games like starfield won’t be supporting dlss) is a disservice to consumers, and means some that pay the stupid cost of this gpu off the back of this nuanced review will suffer terrible frame rates in those titles for such an expensive “midrange” gpu. "One cannot use DLSS 3 on RTX 30-series graphics cards as they do not include an Optical Flow Accelerator". In other words, the 4060 has something that puts the previous generation in a corner. Sure, everyone is on the frAMe generator hate train. " Fake frame", or " input lag", "not pure rasterization". Etc. Well my friends, few years from now, you will need a cooler the size of your bedroom, if you think rasterization performance should double in each generation. We are reaching the limit on what is viable. The 4060 consumes very low, performs better then the 3060, and doubles your frames with Deep learning AI. TO me sounds like pure jaw dropping technology. And the 4060 has it. For 299. If greater input lag is all everyone has to complain about, Nvidea reflex proves that its possible to solve this. AI will improve, and they will solve it, no doubt :) Got the 4060, loving it.. Less Vram, less cuda cores, less Memory interface. Sure. But also, better architecture, next gen processor and cuda cores, next gen everything basically, and performing better with "less". I would call that a win :)

It's clear with how fucking huge the 4090 is and it taking up 400w to build anything more powerful will carry to get larger and even more power hungry it's already barely sustainable. We need to go in a different direction eventually with AI or cloud or something. While I might not like 4060 as a product and think it is pretty flawed because it's a bit underperforming | think it's important that Nvidia are actually trying to innovate. I really appreciate the low power draw when I live in an area with really high energy prices too. I've also gone way more to mobile gaming with the steam deck so I don't mind lower graphics so huge power max graphics don't really appeal to me as much either so that helps.

This is a huge missconception that amd fanboys cant wrap their head around. Your latency is the same how it was without fg but fps is higher. Yeh, DLSS3 ends up kinda self-defeating: The moments when you want high framerate, like in fast paced action games, the visual and lag issues kinda take away a big reason for why you wanted the FPS in the first place. It becomes more like a 'better' motoin blur option. It becomes only somewhat interesting when you go 60 to 120fps, and probably shines when you go 120 to 240, which makes the use-case even more limited. Especially when its used to argue in favor of lower end GPUs like the 4060. Also seems like a lot of games seem to have a poor DLSS3 implementation. I get that at high frame rates (i.e. 100-ish FPS prior to DLSS3 being applied) combined with a low latency display the input lag won't be so bad, but when you've got a game running in between 30 and 40FPS before the DLSS3 step, the input lag just might be palpable enough to make the experience feel "off" especially if playing with a mouse and keyboard.

They are probably trying to funnel gamers into budgeting more for their GPU. In the same way 70 and 80 class card buyers have to think about the 4090 for enough vRAM. They are making the budget cards not worth it, to funnel folks to think about the 70 and 80 class. More profit for them. Meanwhile the 70 and 80 class will be running out of vRAM now, and more so imminently. Planned obsolescence. I didn't think they would be greedy enough to baulk the 60 class, where most of the buying takes place. It seems like they want to take away the gains that Ampere made. Ampere was like a two generational increase in performance. Looks like are taking that back.

DF, please.. NEVER NEVER show DLSS3 framerates without showing the non-DLSS3 (well, framegen) rates as well. If the base (DLSS2) framerate is in the 30s / 40s, enabling framegen is useless and you still get a bad experience. You're better of enabling a good motion blur implementation :). But PLEASE PLEASE mention the _relative_ latency increase. If framegen adds a few percent of latency while doing >90fps, it's OK. If it adds a few percent of latency while the non-framegen is already a bad experience to play, it will only get worse! It means the game feels like a SUB-30fps game, and is horrible to play.

RTX4060 or Ti aren't even "mid-range" with its 8GB VRAM so limiting: 1080p even at ultra settings is NOT midrange in 2023! There are plenty of people who're playing at 4K ULTRA now (high end), so "mid-range" now would be 1440p ULTRA settings with playable FPS and no glitches! Logically this means that basic entry level (budget) gaming in 2023 STARTS at 1080p ULTRA settings with smooth FPS and zero glitches - a 8GB VRAM graphics card CANNOT manage that even with all CURRENT games, with upcoming games planning on needing even more VRAM! An 8GB VRAM GPU in 2023 is a 720p card, which is a resolution and performance which was long in the tooth a decade ago and should be dead and buried before now! We need to move on and allow games companies to put "16GB VRAM" on the GPU for MINIMUM required specs to play the game without NVidia and AMD shortsightedly and greedily holding them back! Doubling VRAM from 8GB to 16GB only costs $20 more but makes a MASSIVE difference! Another point: low VRAM is making MUCH bigger game installations (150GB not unusual) because it has to include crappy low resolution textures, as well as photorealistic textures for those with enough VRAM, to allow MIPMAPPING, which increases used drive space by a huge 33%! Aim for a GPU with 16GB VRAM or more, even if that means switching to AMD as high VRAM graphics makes a MUCH bigger difference than fake extra filler frames that cause latency by NVidia! There are plenty of even current games that require MORE than 8GB VRAM for even MEDIUM settings with Ray tracing, like: Resident Evil 4, Hogwarts Legacy, The Callisto Protocol, A Plague Tale Requiem, Etc They should simply stop making new GPUs with less than 16GB VRAM. Buying a GPU with less than 16GB VRAM in 2023 is buying a short shelf life, already showing obsolescence in some recent triple A games, graphics card!

Yes, more will come in the future but it won´t be in every game, and it's not in every game that the benefits overcome the drawbacks like increase latency. Also, I bet that Nvidia saw that the raw performance bump from previous generation wasn´t be good enough, so it driver locked DLSS3 to just work on RTX40+.
