Two AA batteries in series gives 3 volts, so the same voltage as one 123A. The 123A batteries tend to be lithium batteries which have high energy storage vs the chemistry typically used in AA Batteries. While the two AAs will run the device a bit longer than a single 123A will, the 123A is much more compact. A bigger lens will have more light gathering and better resolution and while I don't know the figures on the NVM-14, it is likely that the PVS 14 lens has a faster focal ratio, and a faster focal ratio will result in a brighter image at the photocathode. This is essentially saying that the either the resolution on the NVM-14 is lower (which is fine because Gen 2 tubes generally have lower resolution anyway) or the lens is slower. You did not talk about the eye relief of the NVM-14, but the PVS-14 has more than enough eye relief even for people wearing glasses or for weapon use where recoil would make the ocular hit the shooters eye during recoil. Sorry to sound critical, but this is the kind of stuff your review should have covered. The PVS-14 is highly evolved and matches the characteristics of the tubes (resolution of the lenses) and it is likely that the NVM 14 optics are better matched to the lower resolution typical of Gen II tubes. I don't really feel as if this review really gave an in depth coverage of these two devices. It was rather superficial. Sorry. I don't want that to sound mean or disrespectful, but the optical differences were not really covered all that well. The resolution of a lens is a function of the diameter of the and it is pretty easy to see the PVS-14 has a much larger lens, so capable of higher resolution.
@Hoplopfheil
3 жыл бұрын
This PVS-14 housing uses a single AA, not two. Lithium AAs also exist now, and are the preferred type to use in a PVS-14. The objective lens on both devices is 27mm, f/1.2. Eye relief is not meaningfully different between the two devices. They both have adjustable diopter (-6 to +2) and they're both meant to be used on mounts with adjustable eye placement. I just got this information off of Google, in much less time than it took for you to write this comment.

You can definitely afford another 1500$ optic with three four commercial breaks KZitem is throwing up on this 8 minute video. But seriously, it would be cool to see a real side by side comparison between plain old gen 1, gen 2, and gen 3. I've got an older gen1 monocular that I was deeply impressed with years ago. I still think 1500$ is out of my price range for one of these fancier units, but it would be nice to know us realpoors aren't fucked with a gen 1.

Considering most don't have nv capabilities at all, you're fine. The image is grainy, and has the most limited range, but it'll work. One thing to consider:. If you can afford a gen2/2+ unit get one. @@TeaAndBullets I'm just saying that most of this stuff if just expensive for the majority of us. It took me almost two years and a credit card to buy my first NV or Thermal sight. Digital NV has come a LONG way and yet the name brands are trying suck all the life out of us. Siyonx could easily built a digital version of the PS31 for easily $400-600, but they don't. The name brands could do it too, but I'm afraid they think it will rob them of profits from the Milspec NV. Just like ATN can built a $1000 thermal rifle optic, but they can't make a $1000 helmet mounted optic? I call BS and it's upsetting.

How'd you get such a great deal on the PVS-14? Still saving. Saving forever for one of these.

If you don't mind a sketchy gray market or used/blem tube, you can find some deals on eBay. Otherwise you should be able to get into a good green phosphor unit for about 2400.

I have both. I agree, the biggest problem with the NVM-14 is the lack of accessories (sacrificial lens), and bridge mounts. In hindsight I would go only with the PVS-14. Thanks for the video 🙏

For sacrificial lens just cut out a piece of lexan and hot glue it and or electrical tape wrap it around your lens. Peel it off if it gets too scratched and replace (or buff it back to clarity)

@@DaveSmith-cp5kj What I did was buy a Butler Creek scope protector that fit over the edge of my NVM14 lens, and cut out a piece of plexiglass/lexan and super glued it to the scope protector, and then fitted it over my NVM lens. If it's a little loose, you can wrap electrical tape around the NVM14 so that it gets a snug fit with the Butler Creek scope protector. You can also electrical tape the outside if you're worried about it coming off. I like the butler creek scope protector because the protector flap flips up with a button click and you're good to go. Im not sure if your method interferes with the NVM14 daytime lens protector or not.

@@timring3684 Oh yeah on my right hand side monocular I do exactly that. I have a hole drilled into the cap as it is my quick near focus. I don't use the daytime pinhole cap at all. I have a NVD case I put my night vision in during the day which keeps the weight off my helmet and also leaves it in the dark. But yes using the lexan will prevent the daytime cap from fitting. You can however 3D print a different daytime cap from TPU. Most of them are designed to fit over the USGI HUD compass.

I'd be interested in seeing the Gen2+ tubes compared to Gen3s. Everything I have heard is here say.
