The blackout of 2003 was an out-of-body experience for me. I had never seen the city look so beautiful in my life.

I was in Philadelphia where they disconnected PECO from the grid because some worker grunt saw a red flag, and in 1977 I was at camp in Litchfield, CT. Glad I missed them. Looks can be deceiving. Blackouts are dangerous. Did have a nine-hour brownout on a hot day in my building once (nine floors) and I worked there so that's the closest experience I had.

I was working on the Grand Concourse in The Bronx the night of the 1977 blackout. I saw store gates ripped down and looting going on like crazy. I was stuck inside the theater, Loew's Paradise, where I worked. That is a night I will never forget.

Now imagine not having a 24-hour news cycle and getting hit with all this stuff once a day in the papers or on TV. Those were interesting times that's for sure.

I was there for a few weeks in 78 with a buddy who lived there. Him & his pals gave me the nickel tour on a daily basis. Times Square, Aerosmith concert at the Garden, 42d St, Giants/Eagles game at the old Meadowlands. We hung out at McCanns Bar outside the Garden. Some kid had his guts blown out by a sawed off shotgun. I guess he was dealing weed on the wrong corner...

If there was another blackout you bet your ass I would get some high end music equipment that I would never be able to afford. Maybe a Rickenbacker bass and whatever amp head I could carry out of the store. I would feel no guilt or remorse for looting a guitar center, now, I would draw the line and not loot a small mom and pop music shop.

Property is replaceable. Yes, stealing is wrong. But if you're broke despite working your ass off & the lights go out, of course you're gonna take advantage. Did you happen to see the burned out shithole they lived in? Nobody cared about them. Why should they care about some DJ equipment?
