I remember riding this twice! First time was in 2012 and the second time was in 2018.

Cable cars in America always have the obligatory recorded message playing. Sigh.

Ya that is true. Sometimes I like being able to just enjoy it without the automated commentary.

@rtraveler2004 So sad to see this. It wasn't always this way. I moved to Gatlinburg in 03. The very first job I applied for was as a Tram operator at ober gatlinburg. I worked there for about a year, and it was the operators who gave the tour/commentary. Of course we all had our mandatory bulletpoints management wanted us to cover, but by and large we could write our own scripts and present things in the way each individual operator wanted. For instance, someone would always ask how high up we were, and I'd respond with "about seconds high." Depending on the crowd, when the car went past a tower and made that slow rocking motion, I'd grab the handle and say "well that's not normal." I tried to make things fun, but also be very informative about the history of the smokys. To this day, I look back at that job as a beginning of my career. I no longer live in Tennessee, but I am actually a professional tour guide, and it was that job that allowed me to discover my joy of sharing history in a fun way. Very sad to see the digital commentary now.

I had a literal panic attack on this this past weekend going up to the point we got an Uber to take us back down.

Oh no I'm sorry to hear that. These are perfectly safe though but can get overwhelming especially if they pack a ton of people into these.

@@rtraveler2004 It's funny because I know statically I would be fine on it, but like sky diving it only happens if you do it. I think my body and mind knows the dichotomy of these types of structures contrasted against the nature of that environment. Honestly I never expected such a huge tram in Appalachia but now I know better.

This take you to the top at the Smoky mountain national park?

It takes you from Downtown Gatlinburg to Ober Gatlinburg, which is like a small amusement park up in the mountains. Clingsman Dome is the highest point in Smoky Mountain National Park which is about a 20 minute or so drive from all of here I believe.
