Tito Jackson, a founding member of the Jackson 5, died at age 70 after being transported to a New Mexico hospital for a medical emergency.
Jackson was an American musician. He was a founding member of the Jackson 5, who rose to fame in the late 1960s and 1970s with the Motown label and later had continued success with the group on the Epic label in the late 1970s and 1980s. Tito began a solo career around 2003 performing as a blues musician. Throughout his career, he was nominated for three Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the Jackson 5.
The police department of Gallup, New Mexico, has shared details of the events that occurred in the hours prior to the death of Tito Jackson on Sunday evening. The musician experienced a medical emergency near the American Heritage Plaza mall while driving before being transported to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead at the age of 70.
According to a statement from the Gallup Police Department, an officer stationed near the mall requested an ambulance after being informed of an individual who required immediate medical attention. Tito "was subsequently transported to a local hospital in Gallup, NM, where he was pronounced dead," the statement reads. "Following this, the hospital requested the presence of detectives and the Office of the Medical Investigator."
Jackson's three sons - Taj, Taryll, and TJ - shared a joint statement on social media on Monday regarding the death of their father. "We are shocked, saddened and heartbroken," they wrote. "Our father was an incredible man who cared about everyone and their well-being."
Earlier this month, Jackson performed in Surrey, England, with his brothers Jackie and Marlon for what turned out to be the final time. Before returning to America last week, the musicians visited a memorial in Munich, Germany, dedicated to their late brother Michael. "We're deeply grateful for this special place that honors not only his memory but also our shared legacy," Jackson wrote on Facebook. "Thank you for keeping his spirit alive."
Tito Jackson and ex-wife, Delores “Dee Dee” Martes’ relationship began during their teenage years at Fairfax High School in Los Angeles. They married soon after graduation and welcomed three sons.
After their divorce in 1988, Delores Martes began dating Don Bohana. In 1994, Dee Dee was found dead in a swimming pool, initially ruled an accident. However, the Jackson family was skeptical. In 1998, Don Bohana was convicted of second-degree murder, marking a painful chapter in their lives. Tito recalled the news of her death as one of their darkest moments.
Jackson was born Toriano Adaryll Jackson on Oct. 15, 1953 in Gary, Indiana. He recently relocated to Tulsa, Oklahoma. The musician is survived by sons Taj, Taryll, and TJ, and brothers Jermaine, Randy, Marlon, and Jackie; sisters Janet, Rebbie, and La Toya; and mother, Katherine.
