It sounds like he has a lot of traits of hyperlexia! I can help you increase his language skills, while decreasing any problem behaviors he may have. He's the perfect age for my toddler course! If you're interested, join me for a free workshop at MaryBarbera.com/links-yt under "free resources."

Our 5 year old reads to us and it's hard for me not to get choked up. He cant put that many words together in a coherent way on his own but when he reads he's like a completely different person.

These things are so confusing. My son turned 21 months today. He only has about 30 words he can say (including animal sounds and the like), but on a regular daily basis he uses only a few (2-5). One of his words is an attempt at the sequence "2 3 4", which he will say when seeing numbers or when he will try to count things. He's also good at alphabet puzzles (along with many other types of puzzles), he recognizes some of the letters, like if I aske "where is B?" but doesn't name them, and definitely can't read. At the same time I'm not really sensing an obsession, and his receptive language is excellent. He understands commands and it's actually very easy to teach him words. He points to all parts of his body or other's body when asked (even the less common - chin, cheeks, eye brows etc), he points on a daily basis. I see that he has interest in other children his age. Does this sound like potential autism?

It is hard to say without knowing him but I would check with early intervention to check for speech delay. You can also complete an MCHAT screener. It doesn't seem like it is overly an obsession with letters and numbers.

My little one started reading at around 18 months. At first we thought it was just a fluke until he started reading warning labels on packages and such. His favorite "lullaby" was the ABCs lol. He is 6 now and enjoys chapter books. We currently homeschool because we really want to keep up with his enjoyment of learning. While he has been diagnosed with Autism Level 2, his comprehension is incredible!

That is great that the comprehension is coming along too!

This Might explain my love of reading and why I read an Grolier encyclopedia full volume extended reference set around three years old. I also have Dyscalculia I just don't get numbers and math, there's too much missing context and the base assumptions sound like fake BS.

My son is obsessed with letters and numbers and always has been since he was super young. He doesn’t like to play with other kids. He has a developmental disorder and has problems understanding. Negative notations and wh- questions. He refers to everything by numbers. I had him assessed for autism and they said he has a lot of signs for autism but not enough to be diagnosed. Since he was 16 months he played with letter magnets. He just turned 4 is starting to spell but when he talks all day he counts and does math like 5 plus 5 plus 5 plus 5 is 20! And when he is in trouble he talks over us by counting. I just want to help him but I don’t know how to get him diagnosed with this. His assessment was when he was 2 and half I think I should have him evaluated again.

My son has autism and he just turned 5 lasy May and surprisingly we just discovered that he can already read. However he is having receptive language problems and he loves listening to music by looping the music multiple times and loves to play piano and he shows interest In letters, numbers and he also loves reading books and we can't understand the words that comes to his mouth. Can I ask if my son is gifted?

My 26m girl is reading sight words and things from our pantry. Knows over 250 words . She loves miss Rachel's shows and is obsessed with letters and numbers. She memorize some commercials and shows.Counts to 28 and can count backwards from 10 to 0 but cries when she is hungry or dirty diapers etc as she can't communicate. Early intervention services mentioned hyperlexia and she will start therapies. I do have a 9 and 15yo in the spectrum.

If you're child is healthy and you understand him or her they are perfect and a blessing no matter how their mind works. We're all so blessed for our children no matter others might label them.... Mine will always be a perfect joy to me..and I'm grateful for every single day with her. ❤ So very thankful........even if she called me doggy until she was almost 4. 😂

Do autistic children who can read and count early also be gifted?
@marybarbera
Жыл бұрын
Yes, it's possible! However, It's important to focus on getting our children the support they need for the delays they have. Learn more by joining a free workshop at MaryBarbera.com/workshop.

Yes, I'm both (though not a child anymore), I learned to read at age 2. And both giftedness and autism (even when they're separate) do need support, as early as possible. That's a thing I wish I had, but my autism diagnosis came less than a year ago, at 25.

A child I work with is a savant with an obsession with letters, I haven’t heard anyone at my work say he has hyperlexia. Sometimes this obsession can get in the way of his education. This child is so bright and I don’t feel like he’s being educated as he should. He’s so incredibly intelligent and gifted. What are some strategies that we could use for this student?
