Introduction, Definitions, Aims, Objectives and Occupational Health hazards.
I. Introduction
No work is completely risk free and all health care professionals should have some basic knowledge about workforce, populations, work and related hazards, and methods to prevent & control hazards
and improve health of the workers.
Occupational Health is essentially Preventive Medicine.
It is the application of preventive medicine in all places of employment.
II. Definitions
a. Occupational Health
WHO & ILO, defined Occupational Health as;
“ The promotion and maintenance of the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations.”
(Harrington & Gill,1992)
b. Occupational Health Nursing (OHN)
“ The application of nursing principles in conserving the health of workers in all occupations ”.
( American Association of Occupational Health Nurse - AAOHN)
III. Aims of OHN
Aims: 4Ps.
1. Promotion and maintenance of efficiency & wellbeing of workers
2. Prevention of ill health & control accidents, disabilities etc.
3. Protection of workers against any health hazards.
4. Placing and maintenance of the worker in an occupational environment adapted to his physiological and psychological ability.
IV. Objectives of OHN
1. To Promote and maintain the highest degree of physical, mental and social well-being of workers in all occupations.
2. To prevent health declination (Sickness & accidents) due to working condition.
3. To provide safe occupational environment to safeguard the health of workers.
4. To assist the injured & disabled for rehabilitation.
V. Occupational Health Hazards OR Workplace Hazards
Depending upon the occupation an industrial worker may be exposed to:-
A. Physical Hazards
B. Chemical Hazards
C. Biological Hazards
D. Mechanical Hazards
E. Psychosocial Hazards
(i.Psychological , ii. Psychosomatic & iii. Social)
F. Others - Ergonomical.
